Three of us grew up thegither
Schemie boys wi’ scabby knees
Me an’ Joe and Mackie did
Just what we’d like, jist as we pleased

Mackie was a hardy laddie
Bigger far than Joe an’ me
I was bigger far than Joey
Mackie hardest of the three

Growing up was pretty hard, yeah?
Quick to hit out, fast to run
School was jist an irritation
In the way of having fun

As we grew our reputation
Went before us, closed our bounds
Polis car was regularly
At wir doors on nightly rounds

Mackie was an awful lad, see
Bragged about his strength and wit
Soon became apparent he wis
Just a bullying wee sh1t

Me an’ Joe at last decided
We had had enough of hame
Took off for to join as sojers
Seekin’ wild adventure fame

Never thought a thing of hame once
We were in the mob for good
Discipline and fun and fightin’
Steamin’ drunk an’ bein’ rude

Oor turn came to go off warrin'
Waved fareweel tae burds and bar
Off tae do some fine peacekeepin’
Catchin’ bullets from afar

As we travelled, me an’ Joe had
Conversation, kinda wise
Joe says’ “Here’s tae me an’ you pal,
We’re surviving kinda guys!”

"But if I dinna’ make it back
Tell my Ma I did ma stuff
Died a hero instantly and
All that kind of bullsh1t guff!”

I jist laughed at him, “Aye right pal,
4 Platoon, C Company!
We’ll be back intact and drinkin’
All survived, jist wait an’ see!”

“Joey, whit d’you believe in
Whit makes you stand up an’ fight?
Is it Queen and country wantin’?
A’ that patriotic sh1te?

“Ah believe ah’m doin’ right, though
Ah can’t count past four or five
But ah must have somethin’ to die for
To make it worthwhile bein’ alive”

An’ if it’s fightin’ murderin’ wierdos
Pure intent on causin’ death
Blowin’ up the wives and bairnies
I’ll fight that till ma last breath!”

Three days later, roadside bomb
Warrior in sh1te with me
In the back wi’ Joe beside us
Blood and snot surrounding we

Joe lost fingers, I wis deafened
But lucky us, survived the blast
Man in turret didnae make it
His forever now oor past

Hospital and hame on leave
Joe and me a welcome back
Everyone in toon buys drams and
Wants a bit of hero craic

Going back for more? For sure!
Joe and me are in for good
Takes a bit o’ near-death cruising
Gives you fine adrenaline wood!

One last irony has struck us
Mackie, never mate the best
He got murdered by his girlfriend
Stuck a knife into his chest

Seems he was a woman basher
Every night spent late in bar
Raised his hand just once too often
Pushed her round just once too far

Funny how it goes around, eh?
