What a great picture - see how the photographer felt the need to include a pot plant (bottom left) to enhance the photo - could it be an aspidistra, I not sure.

Kenneth Street Wick taken by Davidson's Real Photographic Series. Probably between 1915 and 1925
regards robyn

Bill Fernie has posted a more recent similar view of Kenneth Street.
http://www.caithness.org/atoz/wick/kennethstreet/kennethstreet1.htm

Help: On the old photo posted in this forum - can anyone tell me what the building at the end is? Was it a school? Was that building in Newton Road. When was the current High School built.
http://www.caithness.org/atoz/wick/photogallery/index.php?gallery=27&image=21

The Kenneth St views from the Thurso Road end looking down to Newton Road!
Coronation Street would be sharp right at the end before Newton Road.

Tricia
NB
Since writing above I have found 1950s photos of school and yes it looks like old school building - the old photo just makes it look as though it is too close to be in West Banks.

Hi Tricia and all
Thank you for that Tricia
I have a lot of old photos of Keiss and I enjoy looking at the ones on the Org , again taken by Bill I think, of the same places taken more recently.

Thank you Betty,

That's a great picture taken from the Parish Church. Great to see the washing on the line ! You cant beat the Solar Drying !!
I think the area going towards the Bridge was called the Drying Green, but it's mostly built up now.

Any more treasures ?

Thanks Trinkie. Glad you liked it. I thought the area was called the Bleaching Green, but I could very well be wrong.

I had forgotten all about the Post Card section until fender made mention of it (thanks fender) and have posted two duplicate photos so I will have to check there before posting any more.

Thank you Betty - more great pictures.
I love the one of the new harbour. It's a favourite view of Pultney and the Pilots' House and Poltney Braes where I played many years ago !
I cant see the Power Station with it's big chimney, that might help to date the picture. We played on the Braes and sometimes we were given a fish from a boat just in, and then we would roast it on the hot pipes at the back of the Power Station. Delicious !
The dark house in Smith Terrace could have been where Jessie Clyne eventually had her Bakers Shop - much later than the picture though. There used to be a little draper's shop further along towards the P.O.
Mrs Flett's shop was behind the Pilots House, on the corner of Huddart Street. Just out of shot was where Mr More the Pilot lived, further around still, in Bexley Terrace was John Cormack's Fish and Chip Shop !
In the centre of your picture is the Shore Road where all the Poltney bairns used to sledge - some failing to stop and thus ending up in the water, going home soaking wet and getting a good telling off from their father ! I wonder if anyone reading this will be brave enough to own up to this escapade ?

Many thanks,
Trinkie

Betty

Trinkie, I'm glad the photos brought back some childhood memories for you. Being from the 'Week' side as bairns we didn't venture over to 'Poltney' often on our own. We did go as far as the harbour on occasion. However, we often went to John Cormack's for chips after the Guides on a Friday night. Our sledging was done on Shore Lane, although I don't remember it happening too often. I think my sledge came from the saw mill in Union Street.

I'm told by a friend that they might have been taken in the late 20's or early 30's as the houses were demolished in the late 30's. That particular change shelter was replaced by another wooden one before a concrete one was built in the late 50's.

I too remember my first venture over to 'Poltney' without a parent. We went with the school to the Breadalbane picture house with the school and had to find our own way home!

Love the photos. Can anyone give me more info about post 293, Market Street 1925? I see that the Crown Hotel has turned into the Crown Stores, presumably because Wick had gone dry and the family needed to survive? My Grandmother, Elizabeth Houston Campbell (born 1906) was one of the family who owned and ran the Crown but she left Wick in 1923 with her mother (Henrietta Sutherland), brother Sandy and sister Nellie. They came to Edinburgh.
I'd love to know more about what happened in the intervening years and also be delighted to hear from any of the descendants of the family.

Delighted to see the advert for John Black & Sons. Their Caithness Homespun blankets for warmth, WEIGHT & wear takes me back. I was brought up in Golspie in the late 50's early 60's and the memories of being 'pinned' to the bed by these monsters is still as clear to me today. Oh but we were happy.

It has been fantastic having another look through this thread and seeing so many of these old photos of Wick and the surrounding arrears especially now that I am becoming more familiar with the county.

I have also enjoyed looking at a couple of books The Caithness Vintage Picture Show and Vintage Wick.

One thing that does surprise me is I have only ever seen one photo of the shipwreck Jean Stephan that came ashore on Reiss beach in January 1958. I would have thought that since that date cameras have become more readily available and affordable to many more people and you would normally take a camera if you were going for a day out on the beach, as that is the only object on the beach there would be many photos of it going into decline over the last 50 years.

If anyone has any photos of the wreck in years gone by I would be fascinated to see them.

That's a great photo – thank you for putting it on.

It was hard work indeed, but you know the more I think about it the more I am convinced it was a lot better than working in Mills and Factories as most folk who went to cities had to do.
The horrendous machinery must have been terrifying for folk who had come from the country.
Think of the noise, danger and smells and air pollution ! That to me, is far worse than working in the open air with smelly fish.... or working in Service with all that that entailed for young women.

The parents of the women in your photo likely came to Pultney from the 'sooth' – from places like Latheron and Sarclet and would have been well used to hard work in the fields in all weathers.
As the children grew up, working in the Fishing industry would give them a steady wage. It was an exciting time – a new way of life with a regular income, and better housing.

When I first looked at your picture I immediately thought it was a Yard in Lower Poltney.... But I really am not sure. The Yards in Poltney were Taylor's in Barrogill Street (where my grannie worked ) Skinner's Yard in Murchison Street and Stewarts and Bremner's Yard in Nicolson Street. Down round the Harbour there were Davidsons, More's and Calder's Yards. If my memory serves me correctly.

The folk who came from the 'sooth' all lived nearby in Royal Street ( now Vansittart Street) or Wellington street. At the top of Royal Street was Coasters' Square – named for the people who came from the coast.

I have a copy of a Scottish Fisherwife – a Gutter, beautifully painted by Sylvia Pankhurst who made a study of Women at Work during the Suffragette Movement . The painting was done when the Scottish Fisher Lassies were down in England – likely in Yarmouth or Lowestoft..... if you'd like a copy please PM me.

Does anyone have any photos of Skinners Yard as I think that this was my mums families business and I have never seen photos of this.

Many thanks.

Got me scratching my head with the boat in the foreground ?? The outmost sma boat looks like the Girl Mina The seiners I think are right to left Golden Spinney with Enterprise inside Ardent with possibly Spray inside' ?? with Ocean Swell inside , Bluebell Maid of Honour with Spindrift inside

My dad had the Enterprise before it sun in 1973/74. Any more photos of this boat? I would love to see them.

I used to spend a lot of time at the harbour as a child and have many fond memories of the boats there and their skippers and crews.

I'd like to thank everyone who has posted photographs and information in this forum which I only opened today.

It was great seeing the history and hearing of people and places that I was never aware of and others that I had forgotten about.

Sincere thanks.

Thanks very much spurtle for posting that wonderful photo of the former narrow-gauge railway from Wick to Lybster. I'm impressed, and agree, the engine is tremendous. A lot better looking than I had imagined.

In many other locations up and down the country, especially in Wales, the locals value these small-routes as tourist attractions. It is a great pity that the Wick - Lybster line was simply disbanded and scrapped when at the very least it could have simply run for a few months each summer.

All in all, a stupid move indeed as we all know now that its gone its gone for good, an irreplaceable line.

Catherine, try Trawlerphotos.com. It`s a huge site with a photo gallery with Vintage photos in. There may be some snaps there. Warning though there are literally 1000`s of photos. Great though if you like looking at fishing boats. Lots of Wick boats in there.

Couple of tests of a slide scanner I bought.
Unfortunately it will have to go back for replacement as the battery won't charge, but in the meantime a couple of photos which I assume are from the late 1950s (judging by the Kodachrome slide mounts).

Scanned a few old transparencies.
The first will be of the Central Church Womens Guild, probably about 1960.

Hello!

I am wondering if there is anyone out there who can help me - I am currently trying (and failing miserably) to find some old photos of West Banks Avenue. I am looking for any showing the end closest to Francis Street. I've had a look through the Johnstone Collection and elsewhere and the only ones I can track down are round the bend towards the High School. If anyone out there either has an old photo or knows where I could find one, well that would be just swell.

Thanks, Gordon
