Caithness Logic
By Don Manson c. 1968

The minister took e’ Sunday School
An’ telt the bairns a story
O’ Pharoah, back in ancient times
An’ all his pomp and glory.

He then telt them aboot a slave
That worked in Pharoah’s palace
Young Jospeh – who wis selt doon there
Through jealousy and malice.

His brithers were the ones till blame
For they hed done the sellin’
Till get e’ loon oot o’ their way
An’ fae their faither’s dwellin.

For Joseph was his favourite son
They kent he’d be the heir
So this is what they did till him
To get hom oot o’ there.

The minister then went on till tell
How Joseph grew in favour
An’ very soon became in charge
O’ all Egyptian labour.

Noo at this time a famine raged
In all the Eastern nations
But Joseph had built up a stock
O’ corn an’ ither rations –

So Egypt was the only place
Where there was corn or rye
An’ Joseph was the man ye saw
When ye went there till buy.

Noo Joseph’s brithers came one day
Along wi’ many ithers
An’ Joseph when he saw them there
Kent fine they were his brithers.

But they hed no an’ inkling
That the man they hed till see
Was the loon that they themselves hed selt
Doon intil slavery.

‘’Noo’’ said the minister, ‘Can ye tell
How Joseph kent his brithers
When they were only customers
Along wi’ many ithers?’’

The bairns were silent for a bit
An’ then up jumped young Bert
‘’He’d ken ‘em minister because
His name wis on the Kert.’’
