View Full Version : Where are we now?

It's two years since I last set foot upon the green earth of Caithness,
Africa still starves and the tripods with flailing arms still come unabated,
Faster and faster they come, but still the world warms,
Carbon is traded and capital flows, but still the poles melt.

What else hasna changed?

It's two years since I last set foot upon the green earth of Caithness,
Africa still starves and the tripods with flailing arms still come unabated,
Faster and faster they come, but still the world warms,
Carbon is traded and capital flows, but still the poles melt.
What else hasna changed?

We miss you and your fulsome lips
Your tender toes tripping
Over Caithness peats and earth
Yet while in Africa the famines rage
And Bono's sunglasses seem ironic, not iconic
Our tripods beckon, 'Bring In, Bring In'
As they gather cash from our frisky wind
For those who care little for bog and strath

In big ways and small, our tiny, insignificant home
With naiive and innocent home-focussed bodies
Gets swallowed up, as China stretches industrial muscle
As America moves to exert obese authority on our planet
Proud Russia wakes again, and strives an empire to rebuild
And the world's disposessed demand THEIR share
Scream out for once to have their bellies filled
To have THEIR share of cars, and stereos, and pop

And who are we to deny those billions fleeced and robbed
By Aunt Victoria and Uncle Sam down the years
When we ravished the world seeking material raw
The furnaces of our war-seeking industry to feed
Justifying declaration of destruction by demonising those 'others'
Who were different or who would not conform to our ideal

We here will one day suffer the indignity of flood and storm
While a once-proud tribesman mourns his last goat's passing
We'll be straight onto the insurance mannie about 'e new suite
While he weeps for his bairn's swollen belly

We miss you, Lippy, although nothing changes quickly here
My pontifications seem a bit lazy considering what's going on elsewhere
