beach millipedes at keiss

just thought I would ask we were walking on keiss beach on sunday past and found the beach to be crawling (pardon the pun) with what I think were millipedes. they were about half my pinkie finger long, lots of legs, brown with lighter brown strip down their backs.
are millipedes a beach insect, has any one else seem them?

I have seen them on Dunnet beach before but not sure what they were, apart from horrible as you couldn't walk without standing on them!
