Halkirk make a date with Shetlanders

CAITHNESS teams did not get much luck in the draw for the third round of the MacLeod IFA Highland Amateur Cup.

The three teams at home landed tough ties, with two in action against County League first division rivals.

Acks entertain Wick Thistle, while Castletown play Pentland United.

There's a full dress rehearsal for the latter match when the teams meet in a vital County League clash on Monday.

The only match going ahead this Saturday is at Halkirk, where Whalsay, the sole Shetland representatives, are the visitors.

Many of the isles side are going to a wedding on June 4 - the date of the first open round of the prestigious competition.

The Highland AFA secretary Harry Windsor yesterday acknowledged Halkirk's co-operation in rescheduling the match.

He said: "Halkirk have been very good in agreeing to take the game in a week. It's very much appreciated."

Whalsay face an eight-hour ferry trip to Orkney before a one-and-a-halfhour crossing of the Pentland Firth.

They qualified for the third round with a 4-2 victory over Lerwick Thistle, who got to the last four in the 1996 tournament. That was the last year Shetland took part and Whalsay, undefeated in Shetland league action so far this season, have high hopes of doing well.

John O'Groats drew reigning champions Back at neutral Ullapool, while Francis Street Club also have a long trek west to Plockton to play South Uist outfit South End.

Dounreay Workshops, one of three Caithness second division sides left in the competition, travel to play Golspie Stafford.

Of the four Orkney flag-bearers, just Kirkwall Accies got a home tie, against Kyle.

Other attractive-looking ties are the Easter Ross derby between Culbokie and Maryburgh and Fortrose's clash with Kirkwall Rovers.
