There was rumour of a proposed running track and sport centre being put up on the viewfirth field, does anyone know if this is still on the go or has it been put on the back burner?
i would have thought that a better location would have been the old mart site, near train station, high school, plenty of parking area and teams etc from other areas could travel there by train.
this was proposed over 15 years ago and nothing happened.
It seems that any attempt to get a sports venue of any description underway falls at one hurdle or another. What happened to the one that was going to be built in Halkirk - they sold bricks as a way to fund raise. Or the hangar project that was going to transform one of the hangers at Wick airport - money raised by the community in so many ways. Seems that these schemes enthuse the community who start to raise the funds and then the scheme disappears as it seems, does the money!
Probably was being funded by the EU so won't happen now.
They, the committee were given one million pounds from a man who had spent his boyhood in Halkirk, and to date, as expected by some of us, a football pitch has been created.
Would also love to know what happened to the 'buy a brick' monies and also the 'bonus ball lottery' money.

Could have easily been funded many times over by the £3bn just spent on this lot......http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-36763212

I think the problem with the mart site is that it is owned by developers who want to build shops - not a running track.
As for being near the train station, viewfirth is only 100m up the hill!
The proposed track was in the press last year: http://www.johnogroat-journal.co.uk/News/Thurso-Sports-Hub-unveil-proposals-for-Viewfirth-development-09102015.htm
I believe there has been some opposition to it from home owners who overlook the field and also from some sports groups who use it regularly.

I propose that let the crooked people that tore it down put it back to the way it was and let the public decide what to do with it.
viewfirth was riddled with dry rot. Only one upstairs room was usable . Some of the downstairs were blocked off as they were unsafe.
