Please take one or two minutes to fill out the Downing Street Petition on
behalf of our injured servicemen bearing in mind we all know what the damage
of war can do. Our comrades returning from Iraq & Afghanistan with horrific
injuries to a health care situation that is not fit for purpose.

With our troops being deployed in greater numbers we must go back to the
dedicated care that they fully deserve - so please lend your support to the
petition to the Prime Minister on the Downing Street Petition Web Site. The
petition is:

'We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to bring back dedicated
Military Hospitals to provide adequate facilities (non NHS) for members of
the Armed Forces who are injured or disabled in the course of their duties'

Please visit the following website (control click) before the close on 6th August 2007.

If you do sign you will receive an email from No 10 with a link to confirm
your signature.

All the old millitary hospitals have been closed. The healthcare for the services was at one time the best around - sadly defence cuts have destroyed the Army Navy and Air Force medical services......

..bit like everything else to do with the military. [disgust]

Even a ward or two where the folk can feel they are with their own, no need to worry if they get the horrors, most of the other folk have been there and can help them through.

Disgusting that I had to sign that!!! There is no doubt that the armed forces need a health service geared to and empathetic with their personnels needs.

Did anyone else watch the Power To The People programme this evening on BBC2?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/power_to_the_people/6613759.stm

A moving programme which highlighted the shameful attitude by the government towards those in need of medical care after serving their country.

The statue created for the programme has it's own site - http://www.theabandonedsoldier.com/main.php

and a petition to get it a permanent site on the vacant plinth in Trafalgar Square -
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/AbandonedSoldier/

...surely more worthy than Thomas Schutte's Hotel for the Birds. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/yourlondon/fourth_plinth/thomas_schutte.shtml)

I have signed, as an expatriate. The situation is the same in the States, I learned the other day that 30% of the USA's homeless were veterans of war, pretty shocking.

I really hope the petition works, however as a word of caution - generally petitions do not get much attention from government. And I am a great believer that the new epetition service is simply a distraction thought up by the number ten spin service.

If anyone is really bothered about this subject then you need to write to your MP, and or MSP. An easy way to write to any of you elected representatives is simply by using www.writetothem.com -you won't even need a stamp. An effective letter to an MP etc should ask for a particular action - often asking a question of a minister or department is the best approach. It is the Members duty to ask the question on your behalf, and the relevant ministers duty to answer. This sort of action gets you on the political radar far more effectively than endless petitions. It is the sort of action that sometimes (but nowhere near as often as it should!) gets a positive result.
