View Full Version : Sheep Breeds
Did anybody watch it's not easy being green last night? They had a particular breed of hair sheep that a couple were rearing in Aberdeen but we missed the breed name. Can anyone help?

Back in the 1930s a wee rural school in Caithness got a visit from the Inspector. To check the children's general knowledge he produced a large picture book, and asked them to identify various things like famous landmarks, or modes of transport. Then he turned to a page with animals. He pointed at a hippo, and up shot several hands, same for the elephant, the giraffe and so on. Then he pointed at a sheep. No hands raised. "Now surely children, that is an easy one?" Still no hands raised. "Well, I can not believe that in Caithness of all places none of you know this. Now speak up someone!" A long pause, then finally a voice from the back of the room said "Would it maybe be a twa year owld Leicester gimmer?"

I think they were Soay sheep.
They were indeed - no need to shear, they shuck off their winter coats themselves. Very nice.
The other advantage of this particular breed is that they taste lovely, even though they are quite scrawny compared to other sheep breeds!
Thank you to everyone who replied for their help. The forum really is a treasure trove of information.
