I noticed some of the men killed in WW1 and remembered on the War Memorial in Dunbeath were in Canadian Regiments. Does anyone know why this would be?

Most likely they were from that area but had recently emigrated to Canada. They would have joined a local Canadian regiment.

My own grandfather was born in Dunnet but moved to Canada so he joined 2nd Bn Canadian Engineers.

The Canadian archives has the attestation papers for most soldiers online. It can be searched for names and gives details like place of birth, parents names, occupation and where they lived in Canada.

If they were KIA the death cards are coming online as well. They give a bit more info than the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
