Help with a damaged cd

My son has cracked a cd for the computer. It is whole but with a facture from the centre almost to the middle of the cd. Is there a way to recover the files on it?

_Ju_, a quick Google of "recover files from cracked CD" produced a lot of hits, but >>>this<<< (http://forum.pcstats.com/archive/index.php/t-16964.html) is one of the more informative ones.

See in particular the warning about putting cracked cds into a cd-rom drive!

I'm afraid it doesn't sound very hopeful. The crack, compared with the scale of the dots which store data on a CD, must look like the Grand Canyon (to the laser) and the fact that the crack is there at all destroys the refractive properties of the disk coating at the crack and round about it.
