Queen and King size beds are different sizes in America than they are here.

A british King size bed is an American Queen size. An American King size is (if memory serves correctly) 6'6" square.

I was wondering the same thing Fran. My mother-in-law had a 4 foot bed and she always said it was a Queen's Size. Not quite sure now though!

Was this was used to be called a "three quarter" or "small double" size, between a single & double bed in terms of width? :confused

A british King size bed is an American Queen size. An American King size is (if memory serves correctly) 6'6" square.

It's worse than that! In the Western US they sell a thing called a California King, which is close to a normal American King, but not so close that fitted bottom sheets work. We have a regular US King but since we live in California we have a hard time buying linens for it because the assumption in the shops is you will have a Cal King.

And then there is Olympic Queen, which is bigger than a normal Queen but isn't quite as big as a King.... There's a whole saga there that had other people in stitches on the chat room one day. It worked out in the end, after a bit of carpentry!

For anyone ever conemplating a move to the US here are the US sizes:
Twin Size 39 x 76 inch (98 x 190 cm) For one person (also called a Single)
Full Size 54 x 76 inch (135 x 190 cm)
Queen Size 60 x 80 inch (150 x 200 cm) This is the most suitable for 2 adults
King Size 78 x 80 inch (198 x 203 cm) 2 twin beds but together
Cal King Size 72 x 84 inch (183 x 213 cm) Even bigger than a King!

Believe it or not, but there are places where I have seen/heard a 4-foot bed referred to as a "Scotch Double" :D
