Fall-out with partner cost accused stiff fine
A SHERIFF took a tough line with a man who shouted and swore at his partner during an argument about their relationship.
Daniel Maclean, 43, was fined £840 after he admitted causing a disturbance at his former home, in West Banks Terrace, Wick, on May 10, and a previous conviction.
Sheriff John Rafferty was told that an argument developed between Maclean and Amanda Bruce following a night out.
David Barclay, prosecuting, told Wick Sheriff Court that Maclean, now of 7 Cairndhuna Tr, Wick, lost his temper and a brief struggle followed. A third party in the vicinity became concerned and contacted the police.
Maclean was said to have earlier consumed six pints and four vodkas and coke.
Solicitor Sylvia MacLennan said that Maclean should have known better at his time of life and was “ashamed” of his behaviour.
She added that the 14-month relationship was now over.
Sheriff Rafferty observed that Maclean had a record involving a similar incident with a previous partner, and expressed the hope that a substantial fine would help bring home the gravity of the situation and ensure he “got the message”.
Drinks driver fined and banned
A 78-year-old pensioner was fined £100 and banned from driving for three years at Wick Sheriff Court yesterday after he admitted driving with excess alcohol.
Angus Mackay, of 1 Wilson Street, Thurso, was stopped in the town’s Princes Street, on July 19, by police who received a tip-off from a concerned member of the public.
A subsequent test revealed a breath-alcohol level of 42 mgs – the limit is 35mgs. It was Mackay’s second such offence.
