If it is deemed necessary for you to be with the patient then you can get a letter from staff and the payment can be waived. I stayed there for a couple of nights two years ago and it was £33

I stayed there for seven weeks in 1999 when my wife was in the ITU and I was given a letter from a Consultant that allowed me to stay free of charge indefinitely. I was very grateful to all concerned, as it allowed me to be close to my wife at a very desperate time.

I stayed in Kyle Court on thursday night, didnt ask to, and had to pay £20. if you are a patient it is free. if the consultant feels you need to be there for the patient he signs the form and its free. the vouchers are for breakfast..one roll, 1 margarine, 1 marmalade, 1 tea and 1 piece of fresh fruit. It is quite a walk to the hospital. I feel it is rather expensive when you can get bed and full breakfast with tv in the room anden suite in a guest house in inverness, which is what I would do next time I go. I did see some caithnes s people there but didnt get the chance to speak to them. the petrol allowance from wick is £21.40 with £1 for parking.

My mum and dad stayed in Kyle court when they were down for my mums treatment twice last year. Dad was considered to be needed for my mum so he didnt have to pay ,also they had a choice from the menu for breakfast which, as you do when in hospital, was picked the day before and delivered to kyle court in the morning. Its not the greatest but mum and dad found it just fine considering, they also were transported to and from the hospital although my dad said he preffered to walk. I know its not quite the standard of bed and breakfast but I dont think it comes high on the priority list, its clean and functional and the costs to the hospital are low. My husband stayed there when I was in Raigmore and according to him its just like being in doctors residence home from home for him.

I am glad you got the full payment for petrol as neither my mum and dad nor I have ever received that much...if you are not receiving benefits seemingly they deduct seven pounds from the total ( I think that was the amount ) I dont know why :confused it costs the same to take your car up and down the road no matter what you earn.

In this day of savings cuts and costings for everything I would guess that Kyle Court would never be high on any list for improvements there never seems to be money for anything nowadays and when it comes to the crunch patient care rather than comfort would be the winner every time when talking budgets.

I have stayed twice at Kyle Court when my mum was down getting cataract surgery. As I was her escort I never had to pay anything. If it hadn't been necessary for me to be there then I would have had to pay about £20. Very basic but okay for short stay.

Thank you for your replies which I read with interest. It seems unfair that i had to pay when the hospital arranged it for me to accompany a family member for his first chemotherapy which lasted for 10 hours. It seems all cases are different as I wasnt offered any meals. the leaflets on Kyle Court seem a bit misleading.,I think people should be told beforehand that they have to pay. As for petrol, I think everyone gets the same allowance less £8 unless you are on benefits of some kind. I understand the petrol allowance is being looked into and may be increased.
I am going to request more info on all this and will let you know the outcome. Cancer patients can get a pass for free parking at raigmore, I dont think many people realise this. It lasts throughout their tratment.

In December I was very close to 'needing' an induction and when the midwife was arranging Kyle Court for my husband we were told that he would need to pay. There was also no petrol allowance to get down there and no food vouchers.

Cuddlepop, we did ask for it and they said they were no longer offering it for inductions, and nothing at all for the spouses! Luckily we didn't have to go in the end! :)

...I know this is sort of off thread but what kind of accomodation is Kyle Court...Reason being back in 1982-1985 I did my nurse training at Raigmore and lived in a small block of flats which was in the grounds of what was the old Raigmore hospital..There were a few blocks of flats round about which was used for doctors.

Sorry to go off track a little!

That must be the block of flats you are referring to. It is a white block with a garden fence round it, and a large tree at the front, with other blocks of flats behind. It is used for patients who attend the hospital for routine procedures, given the distance which may have to be travelled. Also for a family member if the consukltant feels the patient needs an escort. It is 3 floored with 3 bedroom flats on each floor. Patients have their own bedroom and each flat has a sitting room, kitchen, and shoiwer room/toilet which they share. It is very basic and costs £20 per night.

It 's been modernised then...There was only a kitchen,a single toilet,bathroom-but no shower, and 3 bedrooms..small-just enough room to fit a bed and a wardrobe..on the ground floor there was a communal lounge...I did me for 3 years anyhow!
