Every now and then I drop a saucepan lid, a saucer or similar flat circular object. It then clatters backwards and forwards getting faster and faster, the pitch of its noise rising higher. until it eventually come to rest and silence ensues.

I suspect the increasing intensity of the sound may be following some sort of mathematical progression but what do you call this phenomena? In traditional music I would call it a birl, usually three or sometimes four equal and very quick notes of the same pitch. Can any of Orgers of a more scientific background enlighten me and explain what is going on?
