North Highland from Inverness all the way to Orkney affected apparently.

Facebook rumours have it as an explosion at Bonar Bridge or even a solar flare. I'm sure there will be something official eventually.

Golspie AND OTHER PARTS of sutherland were cut off too. there was a warning in the paper that this would happen tonight in Britain due to something happening with the sun sending solar thingies down to earth

No big solar storm going on nor have we been hit by a solar flare unless NASA's satellites missed it which they dont. Also there is no aurora tonight,at least
none at our latitude so that means nothing from the sun has hit our magnetic field. If we were hit by a huge solar flare then the power would most certaily not
been back on in 20 or so minutes

When i Phoned the hydro last night they said they thought it was caused by an explosion at bonar bridge. They said it was the only incident showing on their equipment so they thought that must be the cause and it had likely tripped the rest off.
In fairness, they had it back on pretty quick :)
Good job as I was choking on the fumes from all my scented candles!! Lol

Bayview house backup generator kicked in within seconds and their carpark lights lit my kitchen enough to make tea (gas cooker and pan). We always have candles lit as it saves the switching on and off of lights going to and from the loo and gives a welcoming glow in the hall and the illusion of heat in the living room. I felt sorry for the folks who have had the new gas central heating installed who now have no back up gas fire and when the hydro goes off they haveno heat or hot water.

Hope nobody had damaged with power surges when electricity came back on.

We are getting our new heating system put in a couple of weeks but we've had the gas fire turned to of for the last two years. We've never used it and I wouldn't use it in a powercut either. Hate the thing. Looking forward to getting rid of it.

My son started screaming when the power went off as he is afraid of the dark. Candles easily resourced as spares are kept in the kitchen along with the matches ;)

When my children were growing up CB radio and "handles" were the rage. Portgower was known as "Electric City" because of its new and over-the-top-street lighting. (But maybe those in charge knew something we didn't and the lighting was installed to protect the unwary from the vampires?)
