Would you work doing something you like doing (or are good at doing) for someone you don't like or a firm you've had bad experiences with or something you dont believe in, if it meant at the end of the day you had a steady full-time job.

This question came to me out of all the other thousands of questions my mind produces when I overheard a "if you can work you should work" conversation.

So if you were an avid Wick Academy fan would you play for Brora Rangers, if you were environmentally cautious would you work selling Ferrari's, If you were anti Wind Turbine would you work on a wind farm construction site, if your a clean freak would you work on the bin lorry.........etc etc

Of course this is a hypothetical thread and theres no right or wrong answer. I would like to heard your views.

Also if I may, what jobs would you not do, no matter what the money.

Hmmm, I work for a shower of shites yet I like my job. The company I work for is the worst employer I've had in my 31 years of working, they bought out my previous employer which was the best I'd ever had! And they go on about meeting environmental conditions and targets yet every day I see ways in which they are lax, they have a massive carbon footprint but won't change because some company policy stops them. I think the one job I couldn't do is nursing, what they have to deal with every day, drunks and drug addicts, the elderly reaching the end of their days, but most especially if it's sick kids, I just couldn't handle that.

I would never want to work rehabilitating child sex offenders, I think they should never be let out so helping them to get their freedom back would not be possible for me. Also I would never want to work as a barrister defending the scum of the earth such as child molesters and murderers, there is no defense for doing these things so I simply dont think they should be defended at all.
I had this conversation with a friends daughter who is studying law at the moment. When I told her I could never take on a case defending a child molester no matter how good the money her very simple reply was 'Somebody has to represent them to make sure justice is done' (meaning very much for the child) so it just goes to show that there really is no wrong or right answer.

I agree with you joxville. I have worked at a nursing home as an Activities Co-Ordinator where one of the residents, whom I was particulary fond of, died. I was devastated ! Couldn't go back to that kind of environment again, nor, as you've mentioned jox, seeing wee bairnies ill. I take my hat off to those in the profession who do such jobs, it much be very rewarding to be able to know you are caring for another human under, possibly, extreme circumstances.

I don't like my job, it cause me to spend WAY too much time away from home. But I do it because it gives my family a pretty good standard of living. Just found what I hope will be a better one though.....I was about to reply that I would do anything if it meant I could provide for my family and I'd rather do anything than nothing as long as there was an opportunity for employment.BUT, southern girls answer has made me think. No way I could do anything that would help such scum escape from jail.

You know what Corrie, by responding to the previous message you are not ignoring him (I presume it is a he) you are providing him with the oxygen he needs. As is the case with most stalkers and trolls on the internet forums if you treat their postings with the contempt they deserve and do not respond in any way they will soon get bored and go and do something else.:D

I am afraid this is not true in this case Neil, I have had him on ignore for over 2 months and not responded to his snide posts. But he has still been slagging me off while I have been ignoring him, I was hoping it he would get bored and leave my posts alone but no, the abuse, name calling and accusations have still been there after every post I make. This is getting very close now to internet bullying, I can't respond because I have already been suspended for getting into an argument and I don't want to get banned. I am all for a bit of banter but being accused of being a Racist, Pervert, a fan of Jimmy Savile, an Hypocrite, a Liar, and other unsavory names on a daily basis is really nasty and bordering on slander. Never mind, I suppose he has to get his kicks from somewhere if he has such a boring and shallow life. A school playground bully springs to my mind everytime I see his name on here!

Just a shame the two of you didnt get banned the last time, the suspension obviously didnt work because the two of you dont know when to shut your mouths and let it rest.

The way this bloody thread has been hijacked yet again proves why the sensible members no longer post on the forum. There's no banter anymore; Northener, Wifie, Liz, LIzz, Torvaig, Alice in Blunderland, Annex and Laguna 2 are just some of the names who used the forum a lot, you could have a good debate with them but also have a laugh too with them. Now it's just petty bloody arguments, it's all he said this and she said that. No wonder they're no longer about.

Btw, I messaged Invisible as soon as he started this thread telling him it was likely to descend to bickering...how right I was!

I think I would do any job an employer was prepared to give me, if it meant continuing to support my family and keep a roof over our heads. As long as the job was legal I would not care what it was.

As back on topic...
If I was a vegetarian I would even work in a chicken proccessing plant or slaughterhouse if we needed the money.
infact thinking about it ....it might actually turn me vegetarian...but I doubt it!
I think people at the top can think more carefully about job choices and morals, but, people on the bottom of the working ladder dont have much choice...take the job and be off the dole ..in my opinion you take the job...even if you start looking for another straight away!

I once worked with a chap who was a meat eater for what it's worth who stated that he would never, ever under any circumstances work in an abbatoire. Even if it meant no work. That IMHO is what's wrong with the country. There are jobs out there but people are not prepared to do them.Another instance was when I was on a training course, at the exam stage this guy that was on the brew raced thought the exam at warp speed, at the end I said wow you finished that quick he replied "mate I ticked any box, I have 3 kids and I am on the brew I don't want to work" our conversation ended there the lazy workshy expletive.

People keep talking about abattoirs in a bad way and there really is no need.
One of the best jobs I had was working in a kitchen in a state of the art abattoir. They had all new facilities for the animals and the staff, vets there every day, nice people, good food and no budget. There are good and bad in every trade. Some of their lairage staff had been there for years and years and knew how to handle all aspects of the job quietly and calmly. There are much much worse places where you can work than a good slaughterhouse!

I feel bad eneogh when the calves are mooing until they're hoarse for their mothers once up at the cattle pens awaiting departure to who knows where.

Oh could haul anything but animals to the slaughter house.

Interesting question Invisible. My first thought was I'd do anything to keep a roof over my head but quickly thought that there are things I'd never do. I'd never do anything against my morals like commit murder, or prostitute myself, or steal. Or would I? What if I was starving, if it was a matter of life or death......would I steal? Probably. Where do the rest of my morals fall into line? This is very thought provoking question.

Ha ha, that's the kind of thing I was thinking but you've put it into words! Not so much things I wouldn't do but couldn't do. For example I couldn't do any of the medical stuff a nurse does (needles and stuff), but I'd have no problem cleaning the wards or emptying the bedpans!

I have worked in jobs where i haven't liked my boss and their attitude to the staff but i've always stuck at it and not let them make me want to quit though i have felt like doing so many times in the past in my past jobs. My current one i actually like and like all bosses when their staff makes a mistake they do tell me so. I understand where they come from so i just take it on the chin and make sure i do better next time. Sometimes a thick skin helps you survive and do things you don't want to do or take what you don't like.
Sometimes for your family and to live you have to do things you don't want to or don't like. To give up is to give in. I've not got to where I am today by giving up.

I'm brought back to High School and stuck is a memory of a talk to our by a worker at Subsea 7(sorry to namedrop). He said that no-one works because they enjoy it, its all for the money..........which is lies. I enjoy my work but the money could be better............my first job had an excellent rate of pay and it was rewarding at the end of the month....I also had a great rate of pay as a waiter but didnt enjoy the job.

If you can do the work, man up and do it, is what I say. Life isn't plain and simple and you can't expect every aspect of life to be. You have to take the good with the bad.....Sorta using this as a wee rant but I know some who's on my Facebook and when she was working part-time she used to complain no-end about having to work........fair enough its only facebook but stop complaining and grow up or give your job to some decent genuine person who wants to work. its not like your doing a 60 hour week! (Rant over)

Now to answer my own question of a job that you wouldn't do for considerable wage..............I'll have to get back to you on that one. I can't think of one at present.
