Black Tarry blob at Dunnet Beach. Old ship?

I was walking down at low tide on the east end of Dunnet beach yesterday and there was a patch of tar and wooden logs lying in the sand. Was this an old wooden ship with the remains of the tar caulking? :confused

There are the remains of a wooden boat which are occasionally exposed as the sand shifts - I think there is info about it in the Ranger Centre.
But there is also a large area of peat with fallen trees embedded in it - which is exposed more often. Could this be what you saw?
