View Full Version : jack & jill
I see the p.c. brigade are now saying that the nusery rhyme Jack & Jill has a sinister tale behind it, where is all this nonsence going to stop it getting right out of hand[disgust]

I have known since my teens that many well known nursery rhymes have a history and sometimes pretty gruesome.

Even with Nursery Rhymes, there's controversy -

Been a well know fact that most Nursery Rhymes have sinister backgrounds
Thanks for those links, it was very interesting to learn the stories behind them. My son has just finished doing a 2 week project on nursery rhymes at school, and whether they are politically correct or not, he learned a lot doing it. His class got to make Humpty Dumpty out of a boiled egg, sit him on a wall and let him fall off it and crack, then they ate him for snack!

so pushed him then lol? [lol]
LOL..as said before, many nusery rhymes have sinister origins. My personal favorite is "Ring a ring of rosies" which describes the progression of the symptoms of the plague to death. Not a question of being PC but a very interesting historical point of view. People had no education and no right to speak their minds, so the rhymes allowed them to transmit information in an easy way to remember and/or an opinion.

I'm a bit confused at the description of Mary quite contrary describes at this site ( ie: http://www.rhymes.org.uk/mary_mary_quite_contrary.htm )
I was taught that yes, Mary was Bloody Mary who re-instated Cathlocism. However, the garden described her church: silver bells ( rung at Catholic masses), cockel shells (symbols of the Catholic pilgrim to Santiago de Compostela) and pretty maids all in a row ( the Nuns back in chuch).
As you can see, very different from what was described on this site. Anyone else have a more informed opinion on this one?

Anyone remember this version of Jack & Jill?
Jack & Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water,
Jill forgot to take the pill & came back with a daughter!!!;)
OOOps
I've heard an alternative version to Hickory Dickory Dock, but could not repeat it here. I'm sure you can imagine though! :Razz
