Charges 'ridiculous' says bureau boss

CAITHNESS CAB boss Jill Smith says she is optimistic about a satisfactory outcome in the punitive postcode delivery charges controversy.

She said that their offices in Wick and Thurso had been “overwhelmed”by responses, exceeding 3,500, to the unfair charges of £12.50 for package deliveries to the Far North which have the KW postcode The local CAB is participating in a concerted Highland-wide campaign involving all its branches.
Describing the surcharges as “ridiculous”, Ms Smith commented: “In some cases it amounts to more than the cost of the orders”.
She added: “I think we have a good case, so, hopefully the issue will be resolved.”
Ms Smith said that the work of the local bureaux has “rocketed”with the branches having seen some six thousands clients this year – a 29 per cent increase- alone, ranging from problems as basic as a broken kettle to more complex issues such as income tax and wills. A volunteer was currently undergoing training to represent people in court.
The manageress explained that when they identified a trend or common denominator in a certain issue, such as the postcode delivery charges, an analysis was carried out and the results fed through the system to head office for comprehensive action. Ms Smith said that CAB worked in conjunction with other agencies and added: “We will fight for your rights.”
The local CAB is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and is determined to use the anniversary to raise its profile and awareness of the services it provides ,through a programme of events.
The Chest and Heart Support Group is holding its A.G.M. at Caithness General Hospital’s canteen at 7.30pm, on Tuesday, when the guest speaker will be Raigmore Hospital cardiac consultant, Dr Peter Clarkson. His topic is “Highland-wide cardiology-developments at Raigmore Hospital and how this affects patients in Caithness." All are welcome.
