We saw, some big waves, out in the firth today ,when i was out with my young lad.I said to him, i would'nt want to be out there, in a boat today.
SAD
Aye i saw 4 tankers in front of the house earlier im not sure of their size but possibly capable of a million barrels at todays prices thats a serious load Ive no doubt they have tight deadlines to meet, Tragedy for the families, The firth is recognised as one of the most dangerous places in the world many local trawler skippers would agree

Money talks, big time.
My work involves meeting the crews from time to time there usually from the phillipines or singapore they normally go to sea for about at least 6 months i dread to think what they earn but they are always so happy & appreciate everything you do for them not that its much.

The photo here http://www.caithness.org/fpb/2006/november/gallery.php?gallery=7 may have been of the tanker as it tried to make way through the Pentland Firth.
The photo was taken by Sheila Moir who lives at Scarfskerry and has good view of ships passing through the Pentland Firth. She cannot be certain it was the same tanker. Either way it shows how rough the weather was.
A remarkable photo. And how very sad for these men's families :(

What about the crew of the Hamnavoe......they do this crossing daily in all weathers, my heart goes out to them
The various parts of this thread kind of puts a perspective on the "How hard my job is" complaints we all sometimes make.
