View Full Version : London Games 2012
I keep reading on here & in the Groat, that the Olympic torch is coming though our area but I can find no proof of this. Can anyone furnish me with proof or is it just going to be flying over us? The names of the torch bearers have just been named and yet again no mention of us.
Another aspect of this is the torch bearers allocated to areas is a little odd. The one for Tomintoul is not a local lass but a lass from Huntley. Maybe from London they my think they are close but for people living in the Tomintoul area, Huntley is not a short skip & a hop. It is not even a place people go to shop, it is a village on the way to Aberdeen, nothing more. Could they not of found a more local person to carry the torch through the village? I am not having a go at her, good luck to the lass & I am pleased for her.
BBC News this morning, the route appears to travel up from Fortwilliam to the ferry at Scrabster over to Orkney on to Shetland than back via JOG before heading south.
Details are here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17358291) Day 22, Saturday 9 June, the torch travels from Glasgow to Inveness by road. Day 23, Sunday 10 June, the torch travels from Kirkwall to Lerwick by air. This shows that the torch will not be travelling on the ground north of Inverness. If we all look skyward we might see the plane carrying the torch as it overflies us to Kirkwall.

Does it really matter?
If you are desperate to see a flaming stick then do it yourself... Just wrap an oil soaked rag round the end of a stick & put a match to it... Hey presto... Instant Olympic Torch...

The original route was to come up the A9 but after pointing out that it would have to transit through Portgower:eek: the elf n' safety dweebs quickly abandoned the plans.
Still no official London 2012 webpage or statement to say it will be in Caithness. People say it will be but no one has come up with official confirmation.
It ain't coming here apparently, we're in the 'lucky' 5%.

Of course it wont come up here, I doubt those organising it London have ever heard of Caithness and Sutherland! But they still want some of our money to help pay for it!!

And why not Golach, Scotland has put a lot of money into it. We have also suffered loss of Lottery funding destined for Scotland and diverted to pay for the games.
So London can have it's wonderful games and yet we can't even get a decent football pitch on the park!!!
Anyway's.....he will kick the Bairns out of the way, not shove them!!!

but if you look at the official sites and maps, we are not on it. Why if BBC News is saying it is.

sorry gerry4, I was a bit out with Thurso on BBC's lunchtime news map, the one on post #16 looks like it's going to Scrabster via Mybster and Bowertower, there's all sorts of stories now.....don't think i'll bother with it now
According to the offical Street by Street Routes, which were released today, the torch will Not come anywhere near Thurso or John O'Groats.
This link is for the 9th of June when it travels from Glasgow to Inverness.

This link is for the 10th June where it starts off in Kirkwall and travels to Lerwick.

No where in in any of the PDF's does it mention stopping anywhere between Inverness and Kirkwall.
Yet the Highland Council state that the Torch will stop at John O'Groats.
I Just do not know what is happening and I do not think many people do know
The Highland council are either incompetent or liars:

The Highland council are either incompetent or liars. We have to choose ??That's a tough one at the best of times.
'Heads' they're liars, 'Tails' they're incompetent!
Howzat?

I doubt if I will but if I am sure there are some people in Caithness who would want to. If it is to inclusive then why not let it take the ferry and so come through Caithness. Also if that is happening why is it not on the official maps and schedule. Is Highland council hijacking a unofficial stop off in Scrabster?
Maybe it’s time to adapt Alrock’s idea. Wrap an oil soaked rag round the end of a stick & put a match to it then we could ask a team of volunteers to run with it from Durness to John O’Groats while we cock-a-snook at London and Seb Coe,;)
