you must have software for each pc, or at least a licence for each piece of software on each pc.

e.g. You buy Microsoft Office for 5 PCs and you get 1 disk and 5 licences.

The server will only hold shared data and perhaps offer an internet connection to the network but the software should be installed on each pc.

If in doubt, contact the publisher of the software and ask them the best way forward.

if your using windows server you "should" have the licence for the server software and client access licences (CAL), works witout it but not legal. then if you have exchange you need cals for it too. its all very complcated for servers, thats the nice thing about linux.

you dont need to buy software for every pc connected to the server but you have be licenced for every copy you are using eg.

5 computers
all running xp pro
ms office on 4 pc's
server running ms server 2003

------
required

5 ms xp pro licences
4 ms office licences
ms server 2003 licence
5 cals for ms server 2003
--------

each pc probibly allready had a licenced copy of xp or whatever operating system so you probibly would not need to buy them.

if you were a non profit orginisation or charity you would be able to get licences at a large discount

in your case you will have to get a licence for any software you are putting onto your laptop if you dont have spare licences, eg ms office, and a CAL for to access the server. unless you are removing another pc from the network
