Western Isles - we have had a 'fair wind' yesterday, blew me off my feet in town and moved the car about a foot sideways, picked it up and dropped it whilst going round a bend.
Fairly calm at the moment - the ferries are sailing, will just have to wait and see what more comes as understand there are more breezes due over the weekend.
Tucked away all the wheeliebins, pots etc a couple of days ago but the sheep troughs did not move and one of them went for a little flight to field and a half away!
No snow here and not cold enough for it either - bitter wind but not cold out of wind.

I like the calm words; "Fair Wind", "Fairly Calm" "More Breezes due", those soft southeners don't know what 'wind' is!
Thanks k211 - that's proper snow on the ground there!! Wonder how long before it hits Caithness?!! Dreading it! It's certainly freeeezing today in Thurso.....:(
Just had a wee bit of snow.. this http://magicseaweed.com/msw-surf-charts2.php?chart=1&res=750&type=wind&starttime= a bit windy?

A HUGE storm really?
What is it? a tornado? a tsunami? or a dusting of snow?
With the weather at the moment..hailstones....black sky and sleety bits.
Im glad I wrapped Lauren up in her salopettes for school today!
Is it supposed to be bad all weekend?
Beautiful sunny dry day over here - "wee bit windy!!" but not a howlin gale, rain, snow or anything else - magic

The charts are changing that much from one day to the next i am only going to give you an update for the weekend! and even then i doubt it will go as planned lol
saturday - wind, westerly gusting to around 50mph, temps maybe a degree or two warmer than today though i doubt it will feel like it and a dryish start with a heavy band of rain coming in over the evening and night.
sunday - wind, a deep low is forming just off cape wrath during the early hours by 6am it'll be from the NW and gusting to around 80mph in exposed and coastal areas but by noon the centre (on the charts) has already reached mainland europe/scandinavia so our winds will have to gusting around 45mph again from the west and easing to gusts of around 35mph during the afternoon and evening. temps cooler like today again so around 2c to 4c though again will feel colder in the wind. that heavy rain during the night could turn to snow/sleet briefly but it will dry up as daylight comes in.
There is a huge difference in temperatures across the county that this is just an average!

A lot of folk, especially fellow agriculturalists, over here use this site....
http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsavneur.html
f (http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsavneur.html)or what the winds going to be doing - Generally very accurate - Click on the 10m Wind link in the grid near the top, and then you can step through the next week in 6 hour increments - Site is in German, but you get the gist! Niederschalg is precipitation, temperatur speaks for itself, taupunkt is dewpoint, bodendrunk is air pressure at ground level - You'll get the hang of it!

It's the same charts i use, mainly the 12z ones as they seem more accurate for here
http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=charts;type=gfsh500;sess=
looking on the top row, the 500 for isobars, 850 for temps and h500-1000 for cloud cover and jet obviously for the jet stream.

I wonder if this is the same low that dumped a lot of snow on Nova Scotia and then Newfoundland earlier this week?
We're having a thaw right now, but I doubt the snow banks at the roadsides will go.
we normally get hit here 10 to 12 days after the other side of the pond so perhaps the same as last year.

I'm just hoping that when I look out the window in the morning I'm still in Lyth, and not in Oz on top of some witch!! Lol
That wind is fierce, windows rattling as if they are going to burst!
Hope the cars haven't blown away....

Hi Silverfox....sounds like it's easing a little now, although there's still some strong gusts that rattle the windows! I guess we're all early-birds in Bilbster! ;)

Very windy it is. A disruption in the force I sense.
Not sure what the wind speed is here in Thurso but its certainly stormy out there!! Think thats me up for the day.......
Both Scrabster and Dounreay clocking gusts to 76 mph half an hour ago, but I think tugmistress.co.uk may have been knocked out by the wind as I can't access her site anymore.
Just had a look at Tuggs site and wind speed is 64.6mph at the moment - and has been as high as 76mph in the last hour!!!!! Think there could well be some damage out there today.
I'm glad I'm not the only one up early this morning, :confused. I'll be even happier come daylight and I can see what dustbins and bunkers have been stalking the house!
We've had a big 'un out on Strathy Point - got up at 04.30 and had a hot chocolate, the house was shaking, not been this bad for quite a few years, just been outside (06.00) and got a few tiles off, but nothing serious, so going back to bed! (First time I've been on 't Org at this unearthly hour...)
I was woken up by the wind through the night, but just lay in bed - eventually managed to get back to sleep. Was convinced the roof was gonna blow off at one point. Thankfully it didn't.....
Still wild out there just now. Brrrrrrr!
Bolted gate unhinged itself and took two of us to close it securely again. Everyones rubbish seems to have gathered in our garden, including a duvet which is soaking wet. Despite that a cat was curled up in it asleep this morning.
Hope it calms down later as have to go hospital visiting in Wick this afternoon.
seeing loads of ariels in bits, my back fence broken and moved a huge rabbit hutch about a foot, it normally takes 2 to move it as home made.
Up around 3:45am too, and a poor sleep then until around 8 or so...
A few ridge tiles ripped off the roof, same as this time last year. Will give me something to do when the weather settles. ;-)

bekisman - we were up at 4.30 with a shaking house as well!
No damage here thankfully, all the roof tiles are still in place. The only casualties were the wheelie bins, which had to be retrieved, and a leg strap on my horse's rug!

I don't remember our Caithness flagstone slates coming off, not even in the worst gales.
Does anybody still make them these days?

I did my roof in Caithness-all okay after the gale, and I'm not a roofer!!

I see the BBC coastal areas report was saying that about 05.00 there were 81kn gusts 93mph? (been here 23 years and can well believe it)
