Laptop security

New (to me) Laptop Dell Latitude D610 with fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. I downloaded free version of AVG and it also was pre-installed with Windows Security Essentials. Will there be a conflict if so which should I keep? They both detected Trogan Horse this morning and are driving me crackers with messages.

AVG says failed to remove, MSE says it has removed the threat but then keeps finding it again.

Personal preference really, MSE or AVG but best just using one - I prefer MSE.

Thanks Charlie, I'll go with your suggestion. I've had troub with AVG before but I thought it would be better on W7.

Download, install and run the free version of Malwarebytes. http://www.malwarebytes.org/

That should nuke your trojan(s).

surf the internet with a windows logon that has admin rights
prob a java trojan i bet

if thats the case that the ans.

make a new user call ADMIN
and then log-in as ADMIN
and make all other users LIMITED/restricted users

with administrator rights, internet explorer will let trojans hidden in java thru.

Thanks dx, I've removed AVG and that seems to have sorted the problem.

I have another issue that someone may have a suggestion for. I have a database on Goldmine v6.7 and it won't install on Windows 7. Latest v of Windows should be XP. Is there any way of maybe creating a vertual pc to run XP so I can load it?

If so https://www.virtualbox.org/ allows you to run any number of virtual machines (running whatever u want) under your existing operating system.
