19MW from 3731MW possible forecast for 5.30pm GMT on 1st October.

Output from wind hasn't been as low as this since.....oh thats a tough one..............eh.....I don't suppose 21MW on 15th September 2011 counts?

Oh gosh John, forgot to show you our big stand-by generator when you were here, I've got about a week's supply of fuel in at the moment, going to build that up; ready for 2020.

Seems like the wind turbine has had it's day...........................

Hm - I have a sneaky feeling I may need one of those before too long. We get too many power cuts here already.

I assume you expect the wind to be blowing all the time at 90mph? I suppose solar power is useless cause its gets dark too!

I don't expect any such thing but our Governments do. But Alex Salmond wants 100% of our electricity from renewables by 2020, and most of that is supposed to come from wind energy.
Incidentally, National Grid's first forecast for tomorrow was for zero output from wind at one point but it has been revised on the short-term forecast to a stonking 11MW.

11MW - is that from 3731MW?

Indeed. Combine it with solar and marine energy I can see no reason why this cant become a reality. Unless I am very much mistaken iceland has all its power from renewable sources and having a friend that lives there she says that its always on

But that's geothermal ain't it?

They have a bit of an advantage. Mind you, Scotland with volcanoes....?

Yes. The initial forecast was zero.

weeser, we have no large scale marine energy or photovoltaic energy right now (nor geothermal), nor can anyone tell you when we will have. Hydro electricity is used for balancing fluctuations and standby for breakdown etc. 2020 is only nine years from now. There is frequently no wind across not just Scotland but UK and Europe. To put the 11MW in perspective, UK demand as I write is just under 34,000MW and Scotland will be using about 3,500MW of that so 11MW from wind isn't very helpful.

All very well, but the wind turbine up here is a magnificent beast which is in harmony with and accentuates our landscape and I cannot understand why people get so upset about them-IMHO of course--tin hat just fitted on!

Basically, it is because Government is taking the country down a route which relies on windpower to provide the lion's share of our electricity requirement and a power source which is frequently just not there cannot do that. The cost of supporting this insupportable policy is rapidly increasing-everyone must be aware by now that our fuel prices are rising and renewables are partly to blame, and when we have the situation that it costs more to not use wind energy when it is available because there is no requirement for it, you have to begin to wonder if perhaps this is not the best way to go.

So whats your Plan B Ywindy?

In a parralel thread on here, the BBC are reporting oil production down 16%, gas production down 25%, hydro production down 33% - Then theres nuclear off the agenda in Germany following Japans experiences and UK coal mines nearly non existent anymore and proving to be rather dangerous unfortunately :(

So, Ywindy, given that wind power production is the only area of growth, once you've arranged to have them all cut down as you don't like looking at them, what is your plan B?
