View Full Version : Hacking How should the perps be treated?
Just considering the person recently arrested after the FBI co-operation with Scotland Yard.
I get that it is the internet and some consider it their own private playground. But.. I think that breaking into a network and stealing or destroying data is just the same as physically breaking in to a building or chucking a brick through a shop window. In fact it is much more disruptive and costly to modern organisations, commercial or state.
I wonder if these peeps actually do understand what they they are doing and the likely consequences ?
I'm sure they understand, it's partly the thrill of being able to do it, partly the thrill of breaking the law.
They're jusy Grafitti artists at best, common vandals at worst.
They're mostly youngsters who get caught. The more professional can cover their tracks better. I can imagine the buzz they get but its a stupid game to play.
The disruption they cause to thousands, if not millions of people, lives, and possible damage to business revenue makes me think they should be neutered. Or their hands cut off.
More hair-brained thoughts may be aired. :D

joxville is on to something here. If this happened in Saudi Arabia or many of the other Islamic Muslim nations, I'm certain you people would know what would happen to the guilty culprits.

Theyd probably escape and enter the UK illegally and claim asylum?

According to news reports, he is the son of an agoraphobic mother, who has been a computer freak since the age of 12 years old.(The son ,that is)
He's probably his mother's main carer.
Will cutting off his hands really be helpful in this case?
Who is going to take care of his mother whilst he is in custody?
How much trauma is the poor woman going to suffer during this process?
Just a few rambling thoughts.:confused

Some people would say he should have thought about that before he committed the crime :confused

took the very words out my mouth!
exactlly.
no excuse for preferential treatment what so ever.........
Give them a spellin' & grammer test and if they fail release them onto a bit of suitable ground in the highlands where the 'sports' shooter can take pot shots at them thus saving the bunny huggers from any undue stress, outrage and unnecessary suffering.

It is so wrong!! I have been hacked mysel, it is not a nice feeling.
1 occasion my clubby was hacked in the space of 12hours the person had ordered £700 laptop got it delivered to where ever. changed my email passwords & home address. Lucky i was on the ball.
Could have been so much worse.
Thats with great security on net & telling NO1 passwords!!!!!
Thankful it was taken out my hands & account closed & set again for me!!!!
The guy obviously knows how to break into even the most secure of Web Sites (even my old favourite web football site (http://atdhe.net/))
Why don't we, in the UK, give him a job as a security advisor before he gets spirited away to the USA and they utilise his unique talents.
Maybe even the Fearnies could give him a Summer job to make this forum a bit more secure
People who are interested should read up on what happened to Kevin Mitnick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Mitnick) of particular note is how he was treated, there's a free documentary Freedom Downtime (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=video&cd=1&ved=0CDMQtwIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fvideo.google.com%2Fvideoplay%3Fdo cid%3D-6746139755329108302&rct=j&q=freedom downtime&tbm=vid&ei=zM0BTqfkBc6x8QP327jPDQ&usg=AFQjCNHcI1ooMzA0wdak9-wqKo7L5NUsHA&sig2=GN5Kp1osri_cqADQL072aA&cad=rja) if you can't be bothered reading up.
Anyone even mildly competent with computers could be a 'hacker', most of the hacking we see on the news really isn't. It's the equivalent of calling a petty opportunistic thief a master cat-burglar. Even the word hacker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker). arguably shouldn't be used as it had a different initial meaning. Lots of these targets have really bad security it's like leaving the door open and letting everyone know it was open.
Anyway all that being said serious or disruptive hacking should be prosecuted - I suppose it depends on the individual circumstances of the 'hack' things like whether the person causes damage or not, you could hack something and then do nothing, not destroy the information. Organisations with bad security or incompetent IT should be take-to-task also. Ultimately it's a white collar crime.
BTW website hacking/defacement is considered the lowest of the low even lower than DDoSing within the 'hacking' and security community.

Actually it's the other guys that took that domain down for copyright infringement, but they've changed their address http://atdhe.me or http://atdhe.ws/ or http://88.80.11.29/

yeah I would hit him with a fine or suspended jail sentence (assuming he is guilty) and then try and focus him on getting a job in the IT industry. You usually find they do this sort of thing for attention, being neither sociable or athletic normally, its a way to show their talents.
Recquery,
I wouldn't assume every 'hacker' is just a semi-skilled opportunistic laymen. Things like buffer overflows may appear simple enough in theory but executing them is certainly beyond script kiddies no matter how hard they may try.

I agree and a lot of those guys are employed by organised crime organisations or spammers, I just meant things like guessing a four-digit voicemail password isn't hacking.
Hacking Is So Easy If The Site Isn't Up to date All U Need To Know Is Some Simple Html Codes/Java Script Injectors.
ex... http://www.amskrupajal.org/AdminLogin.asp User Admin Password 1'or'1'='1 I'm Not Responsible For Any1 Trying This But All Iam Showing is That Any1 Can Do It.
Any1 can chuck a brick through a Jeweller's window but only crimminals do.
