AIS is the best by far

There are also some goods apps from Pinkfroot for tracking boats and planes if you have an iPhone or android phone.http://my.pinkfroot.com/

i always wonder why the Sea Shepherd crew don't use AIS on Whale Wars :confused
do whaling vessels not show up on the system ?
I would agree that marine traffic is the best. Used to use AIS, but Marine Traffic shows more ships and better details of them etc

AIS is the marine system used to identify vessels at sea. It is a transciever on board the ship that broadcasts the vessels info over VHF radio signals. This info is then picked up by the various recieving (VTS) stations around the country and collated into one place by websites like:-

I hope this gives you a better understanding of how it works.

Not quite - VTS stations do not feed the webpages you list.
I use both Ais and Marine Traffic.
Question. What or where, do you look. When it says a ship is out of range.
Thank you.

I am asking. When it states, the ship is out of range. Is there anywhere else you can look, to find where it is. Mr or Mrs Smarty Pants.:)
