Police launch domestic abuse campaign
NORTH DIVISION of Northern Constabulary, covering Caithness, Sutherland, Orkney and Shetland, will tomorrow, be launching a summer-long domestic abuse campaign aimed at preventing and detecting this sensitive crime.
This campaign focuses on domestic violence and Northern Constabulary's North Division will be taking a number of steps to target this national problem, formally, until the end of August, but will look to implement certain aspects all year round.
Part of the enforcement campaign will be tasking officers to carry out targeted visits to previous offenders to advise them of the existence of the campaign and that a robust approach will be taken against any further offending behaviour.
In addition, warning letters will be issued to anyone taken into custody for a domestic abuse related offence relating to possible actions to be taken by Northern Constabulary should that person be bailed, if appearing from custody.
North Divisional Commander Superintendent John Chisholm said: "This campaign highlights our ongoing commitment to tackling this form of crime. This is a crime that affects many regardless of age, gender or social standing not just in our area but across the whole of Scotland. Our approach is developed from previous national campaigns and we are implementing robust practices to deal with domestic abuse. We want the message to be clear to those committing such offences that this will not be tolerated within our communities."
He added: "We recognise that this is a sensitive crime and that victims may by unwilling to report for a variety of reasons. I would like to encourage anyone to report domestic abuse to the police and reassure them, that each incident will be investigated fully, and in turn, they will be provided with access to a range of support mechanisms."
The domestic abuse campaign will officially run from 1st June to 31st August 2011, but Northern Constabulary will remain committed to detecting and decreasing this form of crime all year round.
