The Wikipedia entry for Morven says that the Duke of Kent was killed in a plane crash during WWII on Morven. I always thought it was one of the peaks of Scaraben. Can someone who walks those hills and has seen the wreckage set me straight, and I will fix the entry?

There have been articles in the groat about this. I'm pretty sure it was behind Morven, by Wag. There's a memorial at the spot.

If I remember correctly it crashed much closer to the coast at Eagle Rock, not Morven or Scaraben. There's a path to the monument, from just below Dunbeath.

My wife worked for the Dunbeath Heritage Centre and was the Museum Curator there. While she was there she did quite a bit of research about the Duke Of Kent's Death.

The aircraft crossed the Caithness coast south of the Berriedale Water, its course coinciding with the line of the river valley. At the head of the valley, still in poor visibility, it crossed a ridge and crashed into an outcrop on the northern extremity of the ridge known as The Eagles Rock. The resultant explosion instantly extinguished the lives of all on board save one, the tail gunner, Sergeant Andrew Jack, who, complete with the turret was hurled clear from the wreck.

Here is a Photo of the Memorial at Eagle's Rock, near Braemore, Caithness, where the plane crashed.

Thanks all. I amended the Wiki entry to say the location is "near" Morven, instead of "in" Morven. The entry has a link to a nifty panorama showing all the other hills you can see from the top. On a really clear day that would include Ben Nevis at 111 miles away.

I found this very interesting due to the fact this happened 2 days after my 17th birthday and a few days before my enlisting in the US Marines for WW2.
