An org tartan would be good. There is a Caithness tartan which is pretty nice, and can be worn by all the people of Caithness, and gets you away from the usual Sinclair, Gunn, or Sutherland.

So, any thoughts about colours? Would you simply have a tartan or embellish it somehow?

Well it's really got to be blue & orange hasn't it (Org banner) - maybe with a touch of green (Caithness map). I don't know what it would look like but it'd get you noticed!!!

I was going to suggest black for the colour of the type, but you have it included. And blue for all the water, wonderful Caithness water!

What a fantastic idea this was.

Kingetter
01-Sep-06, 22:40
Maybe the orange slightly thinner maybe?

canuck
01-Sep-06, 23:01
No, the orange has to be very prominent. You see, I too had a dream, not like these nightmare things that others seem to be having. Mine was very sedate, but the handsome highlander was wearing a tartan with lots of orange.

Design your own tartan here (http://www.house-of-tartan.scotland.net/interactive/weaver/index.html).

Yeah, that'll be right but thanks. I think it would need a poll but just a vote not a summit conference!
And you really want a Canuck to choose a Scots Tartan? lol

Very nice Ann, but water?

Ann
02-Sep-06, 03:01
Nope, water doesn't come into it! Sometimes the sea comes to mind but it takes on a lot of colours.
No, for me it is the moors and the fields.
In fact, patchwork would suit better; the countryside is just a great big patchwork quilt just now!

Kingetter
02-Sep-06, 03:04
Well that's reasonable enough. Now me, I like water first (but not in my Laphroaig!), then countryside, hills and mountains.

Ann

Ann

I was just thinking of Caithness; not specifically using colours associated with .org. :~(

Anyway, there was no orange in the thingy I was using! (N.B. the technical jargon here!)

I used the colours available on the site first, then used a graphics program to replace the colours with the ones we use on Caithness.Org

Niall, just assuming for the moment we came up with a final choice of tartan, could we actually take this any further? Would Caithness.org be able or willing to take this from a design stage to (some sort of) manufacture?
I don't see everyone wanting kilts etc but maybe there might be some 'commercial' application?

Its a great idea, would love our own tartan made on a car sticker, it would be great then to spot the orgers lol

Niall Fernie
02-Sep-06, 11:07
I seriously doubt it.

If people think 9 quid is a bit steep for a t-shirt then what are they going to think of 500 odd quid for a kilt. I'd image that getting smaller items made would be just a pricey as a fairly large quantity of cloth would have to be produced.

Kingetter
02-Sep-06, 11:18
I thought so, but as I'd said, I wasn't really thinking kilts. While I don't happen to think £9 is steep for a t-shirt, I never wear them so that would be my reason for not having one. I did wonder about scarves, bonnets, travelling rugs and maybe a few other smallish items. Maybe the market/demand for
t-shirts with that level of design isn't so great - tartan trousers might go well (even with golfers).

Yeah, great tool for producing tartan - I envisaged the Org tartan being mostly blue & orange with touches of green, black & white...

http://www.caithnesshost.co.uk/Org Tartan.jpg

I would have thought the first place to start using it would have been the site itself then see where it goes from there. As a kilt-wearer with no family tartan I'd consider a kilt in Org colours if it looked good - I was contemplating the Caithness tartan previously (http://www.mcallans.com/info/caithnesstartan.asp) but really don't like it - too much like Burberry and I don't want to be branded a chav personally!!!

Oops just realised that I overwrote my 1st tartan attempt with the same image - sorry!

I too wear a kilt, though very occasionally now (I got to get out more lol), Craig, but never find the 'samples' on screen (old monitor) look near as good as the real thing. I don't dislike the Caithness Tartan as depicted in your message but it doesn't seem 'Caithnessian' to me.
Other than a tartan kilt, would you wear anything else that's tartan?

The t-shirts etc are produced to demand, whereas we would have to buy in all the tartan stuff to then put it on sale. If the same people that do the t-shirts will do stickers I'll see what I can do.

The original seems to have changed. Perhaps we have lost the original, but I liked it.

Certainly to have cloth manufactured would be very costly, but a design which could be ironed on or duplicated electronically would be in an affordable range. But I don't think that I would want an "iron on" kilt.

Kingetter
02-Sep-06, 16:34
I don't think I envisaged kilts, but something certainly smaller though I know I mentioned rugs. I can remember seeing drinks coasters for instance, stationery and the like, in various tartans. Maybe it isn't commercially too viable, but it could help promote Caithness.org
