NHS 24 Continues Roll Out Across Highland
Caithness - From 12 October 2004

NHS Highland and NHS 24 have been working in partnership to introduce a new health care service for the area.

NHS 24 is the new clinical telephone health information, advice and referral service for Scotland. Its continued roll-out across Highland is part of a national rollout programme that will see NHS 24 become available to the whole population of Scotland by the end of 2004 – NHS 24 is a Scottish service, based in Scotland for the Scottish population.

From Tuesday October 12th, the service will become available to the public in Caithness, East Sutherland, West Sutherland, Foyers and Lochaber.

NHS 24 will be available 24 hours a day providing health information and advice, including the out-of-hours period when local GP surgeries are closed. If you are ill and need out-of-hours care (that is after 6pm weekdays and the whole of the weekend period), you should call NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24. If you call your existing out-of-hours service, you will hear a message asking you to call NHS 24.

NHS 24 does not replace existing out-of-hours care - rather, NHS 24 works with local out-of-hours services to make sure that people who are ill are provided with the right care at the right time and by the right health professional.

“NHS Highland and NHS 24 are working together to introduce this new clinical service,” stated Dr Ken Proctor, Medical Director (Modernisation) for NHS Highland. “NHS 24 will answer out-of-hours calls for the first time in Caithness, East Sutherland, West Sutherland, Foyers and Lochaber from 6pm on Tuesday October 12th and will provide a clinical assessment of your symptoms. If you need to see a doctor, nurse or other healthcare professional, you will continue to be seen locally. NHS 24’s introduction in Highland, as part of its national rollout programme, is also an integral part of our new out-of-hours services.”
