I recently spent a week on Iona and was surprised that a friend had a good braodbandn signal in such a remote area. Is this the norm now? I had thought that in rural areas it was still difficult to get a decent signal.

Once reliability of a broadband connection is established I will probably splash out on some decent kit - are we there yet, and any thoughts about what offers good value phone package-wise?

Just done a speed test on my phone on the 3 network in the KW14 7 postcode.

895kbps down, 374kbps up.

So, not superfast broadband, but hardly 'rubbish'.

http://threestore.three.co.uk/payg/dealsummary.aspx?offercode=DSLPP526 Can I just plug this into my laptop and start surfing? Where do I fit the SIM card?

Yep.

Where do I fit the SIM card?

It comes with its own dedicated SIM, I believe.

Plus, I'd go for this one (http://threestore.three.co.uk/payg/dealsummary.aspx?offercode=DSLPP524) unless you're absolutely sure that the reception is good out in Halkirk. Losing £20 is a lot less painful that £80-odd. ;) I know the coverage map says I've got pretty much blanket coverage all over Thurso but the reality isn't quite all that. I get no coverage at all in the Comm, for example.

Caveat Emptor, and all that.
