The last 36 inhabitants of the island of St Kilda request evacuation to the mainland on this day in 1930. The islands' economy had collapsed amid emigration, poor health and high infant-mortality rates. The islands were later purchased by Lord Dumfries and subsequently gifted to the National Trust for Scotland following his death in 1956. The islands became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for both their natural and cultural significance.
