View Full Version : Councelling services
A friend of mine has had a rough time lately (understatement) and I suggested maybe she speak to a councellor about her problems.
I found Fran Davies (http://www.caithness-business.co.uk/business.php?id=1080) and Talkabout (http://www.caithness-business.co.uk/business.php?id=1230) in the business index, has anyone used either of these or would know what like they are? Or does anyone know any other good councellors?
Obviously councellors of the talking type, not the Highland Council type

Not a bad idea, but was thinking something more along the lines of regular sessions.
The NHS have counsellers; if she asks her doctor he/she will be able to refer her for regular sessions.

I got referred by my GP, in Wick for CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - a form of counselling) and it worked wonders for me !! :)
Only problem was I was on the waiting list for about 10 months !! :(

This site will give you the information you need pete34, I hope that it may help your friend.
CBT may be more for Low-Self-Esteem rather someone going through an extremely difficult time though.
But this site also gives ideas about other mental health issues and ways to deal with problems.
I wish your friend all the best anyway !

As already mentioned you can access cbt via your gp, however this is a very specific type of counselling that generally focusses on a specific issue such as anxiety, is time limited (eg for 6 sessions) and there can be long waiting lists. Other types of counselling are available privately and can offer longer term support if this is what is needed. Also, because of the nature of counselling it is important to choose a counsellor/ psychotherapist with whom you feel comfortable. Having said all of that there are no ( to my knowledge) BACP or UKCP registered counsellors in Caithness, it is recommended that you see a registered one as this means they are more likely to have undergone approved training etc. I am a qualified psychotherapist but not currently working, PM me if you want more info.

Being the father of a professional Counselor who received her masters degree in Counseling I recommend your friend speak to a professional counselor.

Remember though that the first rule of counselling is that the person to be counselled actually wants to be counselled. It is a decision that she must come to entirely by herself.

yeah ofcourse, just seeing if anyone on here can recommend one of the local councellors so that the options there should she choose it.

'Talkabout' = Dave Yeomans, who is BACP accredited & has been in private practice for 10 years.
CBT works for all 'issues'; how long you as a client work for will depend on what it is that is troubling you.
Ever thought about life coaching?
I think Alternative Vitality offer this- a good friend of mine tried counselling- and claimed it only made her feel more miserable- while life coaching forced her to take a long hard look at what she really wanted in life- and hypnotherapy helped her take that forward
