View Full Version : The storm
Well it's gone 7 pm and out here at Strathy, it's just a wee breeze; 20 mph? the TV shows us having 80 mph - is this just a lull or what? (I know Pat out on the Isles is getting battered)...:confused
Down here in Berkshire we got a hooley!
The wind and the rain have eased off here too, maybe a lull before the storm:roll:
Bad winds here in East Yorkshire.
Built up late last night early morning, settled a bit today.
Now quite strong gusts. There is also a weather warning for Friday about winds.
55 knots here earlier, dropped down to low 20's now. Practically tropical!
Sounds pretty windy in Thurso right now.
Think the 'lull' is over, and the storm is arriving...

14ft of snow here in Wick ....nightmare cant get out of me front door!
gone up to about 30mph now.. no snow/sleet...
wind, rain and hail bad today but quietened down but now blowing a hoolie again and something is hammering on the windows - do you think it is hail again?
Lots of stuff blowing down the road outside, think most of my stuff has been put away.
Not as bad as our big storm on Jan 11 a few years ago, but pretty bad.
Glad to say I am not out in it.
Good for you for being prepared Pat; batten down the hatches and all that! Keep safe.....
Now getting stronger, big blast against the house (this looks scary): http://magicseaweed.com/msw-surf-charts2.php?chart=1&res=750&type=wind&starttime=
Brace yourself Bekisman....full blown gale here at Borgie now, stuff blowing about all over the place. Gusts are severe, lets hope it's short lived!!!!!
Madly blowing here in sneckie and wicked rain. Brrrrrrrr
Well it's arrived! must be Force 10, no way could stand up in it, wind is howling by the house like an express train - thanks for sending it Pat!
Bit blowy and some sleety stuff on the way back from inverness, nothing too bad but a few puddles that are deep.
Think we got back before it hit!
Been a few flashes of lightning here and the bird table has decided lying down is a good option!
Just waiting on the wheelie bins to start flapping and moving.
Yup, it's winding up now. Gusting over 60 kts and been hearing thunder.
Time for a bracing walk maybe?
Still howling here out on the Point. Power went down at 10.45 for few minutes; candles ready...
Seems to be moderating here a little but see Tugs recorded a gust of 85MPH...highest here in the nuclear zone 61mph

Looks like most of the traffic cams on the west coast are out, must be a doozie. :~(
Regarding my Garage; your only s'posed to blow the bliddy doors off
Isle of Lewis
Hope all in the north are safe and managed to escape the worst of the damage.
In Stornoway all is calm, even the sea in front of house has no white horses and breaking calmly on the shore, difficult to understand how coarse it was last night.
Heard one almighty bang last night but cannot find what it was that may have hit house or cars. Time will tell.
It sounded like some one was crashing around, in my loft last night.
Wind still very strong and howling. East Yorkshire.
It's passed. Lost some tiles, stone wall blown down, but really apart from that, no too much damage...
Seemed to peak around 1am at 66kts (75mph) here. Amazingly nothing appears to be damaged or lost other than the usual light stuff that goes awry when the wind blows. Still got the poly tunnel too which amazed us.
The weather station shows 626mm rain per hour (24 inches) at that time too, I think the wind is playing tricks on the rain gauge.

Seriously, that much?
Oh indeed .................
Certainly makes you think, but even Lizz with her 61mph is a Force 10 Storm, and Phil with his 75mph is a Hurricane (anything above 73mph) as was Tugs max of 85MPH, and from the BBC: ' Shetland and Orkney experienced 100mph hurricane-force winds'
Still it's not much compared to what we have had over the last 20 years, and poor Pat out there at Stornoway - have you discover what the almighty bang was Pat?
All quiet here, south of the hill and the only real damage was the loss of a chicken shed, well actually it's not lost but rather is completely turned round and is upside down!
Chickens are all intact if somewhat bewildered ;)
We had it quite bad over in Kinlochbervie, at one point we couldn't even walk without falling over! There was lots of thunder and lightning and snow too although it didn't lie.
First few from my phone

Those are just outside our entrance and people couldn't leave the pub last night with their cars.
Tiles off the roof, these are everywhere!

We've been quite lucky really!
Luckily where I live no power cuts but remainder of Lewis and Harris have no power, many since yesterday afternoon - many thousands of folk with no power.
Most of the schools outwith Stornoway are shut due to no power.
Been in to shops there is still food there but not a lot of fresh stuff
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-12366273
Think a tad windy blowy out there too.
Been following this, 3 helos been moving people off the rig all afternoon.
My fishing trip tomorrow has been cancelled - force8!
The wind does be back!
Gusting 50kts here, sounds wilder than last night.
