Lord of the Rings.... That's a true story isn't it... :D
Sorry, my favourite biopic is probably Take Me Home - about John Denver, but then I could be biased...
In so far as true life stories are concerned, it has to be Molokai - not exactly light entertainment, but I defy anyone to watch it and feel no sort of compassion or emotion.
Now if you like a tear jerker based on a true story, make sure that you watch "HACHICO A DOGS STORY", This really got to me, it stars Richard Gere, have your box of tissues close by , a great film for any age group, if this does not get to you , you must have a heart of stone.
The Changling, a gripping true story
Papillion, with Steve McQueen.

I can certainly vouch for 'Take Me Home'. It's among my all time favourites, along with 'To Hell and Back' (Audie Murphy) and 'War and Peace'

Riding in cars with boys or Angelas Ashes. Those are my 2 top favourites! Both fantastic films!

My sister cries loads at that! We had to ban her from watching it for a time because it upset so much.

"Touching the Void (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touching_the_Void_%28film%29)" is an obvious choice, even if it's listed as a 'documentary' film. In the extended edition, it's very interesting to see how the relationship between the two mountaineers has been affected by the whole experience.
For a less than obvious choice, how about "Escape to Victory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_to_Victory)", based on a rather less successful but no less heroic episode (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_Match).

Has to be Men of Honour (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203019/) for me :).
mine has to be either the Magdalene sister or the entity
Into The Wild was a film that stuck in my memory long after watching. The book on this was also very good.

Another vote for touching the void.
Though I kinda wanted the green mile to be a true story : )

A river runs through it
Love it more for the cinematography than anything else, but being a fishing nut the fishing scenes appeal too.
