We're all familiar with the thread exit "Hat, coat, door" or "Coat, Hat, Door".

But which way round is correct procedure?

Should you put your hat on before or after your coat?

And what about spats, boots and gloves?

This will keep me awake tonight:roll:

Goodnight.

Hat before coat? After? Hat without coat?

My dear old grandma used to always wear a hat, with her coat and a broch on her collar. She used to put her hat on before answering the door. If it was someone she liked and wanted to spend time with she would say. 'ooh I have just come in' and hey would get tea and cake. If it was someone she didn't care to spend time with she would say, 'ohhh i' just going out'. No tea or cakes for them sigh. She reckoned that when she got to 80 she was entitled to pick and choose lol.

So hat on first before you go out and off last when you come in. Andno wearing it all day just in case. Lol.

In my case its boots, coat, scarf and no hat ;) my coat is a lovely warm thing with a snug hood that means no need for said hat!

When you come in, you take off the coat and hang it up first then the hat on top of the coat as otherwise you would squash the hat!

When leaving, the hat goes on first as it is on top of the coat, then the coat.....voila!

Oh, and the gloves go in a coat pocket (unless wet) so there is less chance of leaving them behind. :)

I can't put my gloves in my pockets, the elastic rope makes them sproing out again

Hmmm, what is the etiquette with a hoody?
Ah, now if you wearing a hoodie, and you put a coat on top, its only right to have the hoodie hood hanging outside your jacket. Any good hoodie weared will tell you this.
In order to facilitate this, you need to put your hood up BEFORE you put your jacket on, then take it down. Obviousley having you beanie / baseball cap on at this point makes this much more difficult, so, when wearing a hoodie, its definately coat, then hat.;)

I suppose it depends what you're doing  but it's not good manners to leave your hat on indoors. I suppose there are a few exceptions - chefs, bishops, surgeons, butchers, bakers and the rest but mostly you CAN'T leave your hat on

When going out, it's coat hat. When coming in, it's hat coat. This minimizes the danger of 'hat hair'. Depending on the level of 'hat hair' there's a distinct possibility the hat goes back on and stays there. Who said I'm vain? lol

P.S. I've also hear that your Mum sews your name inside your pants!
