I always use thetrainline.com (http://www.thetrainline.com/buytickets/?)
The further in advance you buy the cheaper they are - can get Thurso - Aberdeen one way for less than £20! It's also often cheaper if you buy two singles rather than a return.

www.scotrail.co.uk/sainsburys (http://www.scotrail.co.uk/sainsburys)
up until the 30th November you can go anywhere in scotland for £18 return. An adult or and adult and child up to 15
the code is SAINSBURYS10 before booking the tickets.
It does work -Last night I bought two inverness to glasgow for £18 :D
I was delighted. Good luck!
sometimes it is cheaper to buy a ticket part of the journey then another for the remainder of the journey - you have to keep searching on train-line which I find the best site for checking prices.
Had to go from Aberdeen to Edinburgh return one day - just been to dentist day before when tooth broke, so very quick visit needed. Cheaper to buy a return ticket to Dundee and a return from Dundee to Edinburgh - think it was about £20 cheaper that way.
Just checked some tickets on train-line for Inverness-Edinburgh £10 for single £32 on way back but got them on the Club 55 offer - £18 return for when I needed to be back, could not get the first class which was £21 (I think) as not available
trainline is always good and when we travelled to glasgow we used singles as it was cheaper than returns
