I notice from a plethora of posts that the orgers as a community appear to be bedazzled by large retail chains; supermarkets in particular.

However a number of large retail chain operating in Caithness have not appeared on any posts- and I wonder how much these are valued

Edinburgh Woollen Mill- bit retail chain (London and Windsor have branches remember)
Boots
Semichem
Superdrug
Carpetright
Ladbrokes

On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is seldom and 10 is frequently, how often do you go through the doors of these stores

Furthermore, if they were to withdraw- due to the recession, how much would they be missed?

of the local charity shops, which do you think gives good value for money and why?

On a trip north with husband, we returned home with an antique desk (which he later sold on at a profit) and a set of edinburgh Crystal (which he gave as a wedding present)

Both were purchased for under £100 (combined total)

So which outlet gives best value for money and what has been your best buy?
Got a silver claret jug from a charity shop in St. Andrews a few years back...oh wait a minute, I won that jug. (three times so far.)

You forgot
Homebase and New Look to name 2!
I dont go to EWM, superdrug, boots or carpetright very often (even for a look) About twice a year at the most...before Christmas and then the Jan sales
But buy babywipes from semichem if on special offer.
About once a month or less
Labrokes.. never set foot in there!
PAH and New look about once a month
Homebase...once a month or so...if looking for decorating ideas or emergency bits to fix things when normal shops are shut!
Or we cannot wait for a screwfix delivery!

The omission of Homebase and New Look was deliberate- these tend to appear on other threads and are probably among the bigger earners after Tesco.

Semi chem would def be missed in Thurso, most of the time they are far better priced than Tesco, maybe we use it more in Thurso so notice the difference in price.

Do you spend your working time on high streets assaulting people with a clipboard so you can interrogate them under the guise of market research?

Edinburgh Woollen Mill - Never bin in.
Boots - Hmm, think wifey has bin in.
Semichem - Mebbe wifey again.
Superdrug - I went, I saw, I left.
Carpetright - Got a really cool end of role bargain bucket type jobby, one of those kiddy ones with the roads and stuff on, it's brilliant. I do find it quite distracting though when I really should be working ........... bbrrrrmmm, screech, brrrrrrrrm neenaw neenaw screeech
Ladbrokes - errm no, if I want to persist my money up the wall I am quite capable of doing such with the help of cheap booze from tezzas.

Let me see...everything except Ladbrooks (don't gamble) and Carpet Right (don't possess a carpet), I get from Tesco :D

So I wouldn't give a stuff if they were here or not.

Right from the posts I deduct that were Boots to close (the biggest pharmacy- and possibly the oldest of the chain stores) or Mackays, or Semi Chem, no-one would be upset- but it would single handedly wipe out the centre of the town- taking all remaining passing trade.

or does everyone on the org only shop in Tesco or online?

maybe Wick should go for the biggest Tesco user award of the year?

I apologise bagpuss if I have missed this somewhere but why, when you live in Hampstead, are you so interested in the general demographic of Caithness and seem to love coming on to denegrate things such as nights out in the county?

Bagpuss.
In your 1st post you missed out New Look and Homebase as well as Mackays.
You said that you missed out New Look and Homebase deliberately after I asked about them, you made no mention about Mackays and are now concurring that no one shops there as you got no feedback on people shopping there!
That is not fair tactics.
If it had been mentioned in your first post survey you might have got more people replying that they shopped there.
I like a look around in Mackays and shop there but I prefer shopping "on the street" in Thurso than in Wick as I know the better places to park for getting the buggy and kids in and out the car and know where the nearest loos are for my oldest (4yo) no matter where I am!

I'll put my hands up and admit to being part of that small group who only come up to Caithness for family emergencies- and then run Wick down for having fallen into the Tesco trap of losing their town centre. I'm in the county more often- sick relatives being the reason- and every time I'm north I see yet another gap, which often means that another of my parents' friends has given up- and no-one has been prepared to take it on.

The loss of Woolworths and the sale of Cabrellis probably did as much harm to the town centre as tesco and the retail park- both took people out of the town centre.

As for the part of London where I live- the specialist shops have had their revenge- after all, any trip to shop in chain stores here involves the M25- no-one's idea of a good time. There are small eclectic shops nearby which had been doing okay- but faced with the hard times ahead of us, are getting ready to shed staff. Small retail is on the way out across the UK- but its part of our heritage.

My neighbour in the south is a retired university teacher who was born in Germany - and being Jewish, left with her family in the mid 30's. Her family owned a department store in Munich- and she argues that it was envy of those businesses doing well while others were failing that fuelled the Nazis' rise to power.
