I am a great grandson of Alexander Sutherland, and great great grandson of Hector Sutherland and Margaret Reid. Alexander was born in Wick on 20th November 1832, and married Mary Flett (from Findochty in Banff) in Wick on 1st November 1855.

I have details of the births of a number of the descendants of Alexander Sutherland. I have the full ancestry of Mary Flett which is available on a number of the Fletts of Findochty websites.

Did Mary Flett have a sister Jane Flett b c 1836 Banff who married 1854 in Wick to George Sutherland b c1826.

In my tree I show the family of Hector Sutherland m1817 to Margaret Reid
but I am also related to the Hector Sutherland m1820 Margaret Wares line. These two families around same time.
I need to find George's parents. Could well be they all relate. The name Hector is certainly recurrent with George's 1st son being a Hector.

George S is indeed brother of Alexander S - from George death cert 5 Feb1899 son aged 77 of Hectors S & Margaret Reid. 17 Sinclair Terr Wick. retired Inn Keeper.

Do you have the Sutherlands and Reids any further back. I imagine both Hetcors above may prove to relate - perhaps cousins?? I have Hector 1799-1881 (m to M Wares) as son of Alex S & Margery Reid in Latheron Parish.

I have noticed that you have stated that you have the full ancestry of Mary Flett. Jane Flett (cannot find anywhere her birth details) married to George Sutherland on 17 Mar 1854 and died 31 Oct 1890 are also my gg grandparents. I live in Australia and come from David Leith (g grandfather) who was born 19 Feb 1852 in Wick. Because they were the step children of Alexander Manson. Christina’s first husband James Campbell was their father.
Are you connected to Jane Campbell who was the daughter of Christina and James Campbell?
Jane’s sister Williamina Campbell was my great grandmother, I have not been able to trace any of her siblings before so I hope that yours is the correct Jane Campbell and you can give me some details about her.

The answer is yes, Jane was my late wife's great-grandmother,

Starting further back, Donald Campbell ( a cooper in Wick ) m Margaret Miller
And John Steven ( a farmer in Olrig ) m Jean Mckay
Their children married in 1855 - Alexander Campbell, a cooper, and Barbara Steven/Stephen, a house servant, both of Wick
they had a dau, Jane Campbell, a domestic servant in Wick
she married in Thurso, in January 1879, Alexander Manson, a ropemaker from Wick, the son of John Manson and ( looks like ) Georgina Mullikin
then their son Alexander b 1878, married in 1912, Catherine Waters Nicolson b 1889 (illegitimate dau of Marcus Nicolson & Catherine Waters).
this was Catherine Waters Nicolson 2nd marriage ( first had been to David Flett )
They had 2 daus: Kathleen Manson ( b 23 Nov 1913 Wick) and Jane Campbell Manson ( b 5 Sep 1915 Wick ).
Kathleen m Angus Munro from Halkirk
They had 5 children, inc my late wife Cathleen.

Alexander Manson b 1879 from Caithness, may have trained
as a teacher, but left Scotland, and went to Dublin and worked in the fire service. He then joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in 1899 as a regular. He married in 1912 a Caithness girl Catherine Waters Nicolson, the illegitimate dau of Marcus Nicolson and Catherine Waters.
Alexander died in WW1, and is buried at Etaples.

Hi Pra,The stepchildren including Jane Campbell in 1861 Census are not the family you are looking for. Her parents were James Campbell and Christina Sutherland she was NOT dau of Alexander Campbell and Barbara m.s. Stephen proved by the marriage certificate that you have.

Replying to your bit about Alexander Manson remarrying, it was Alexander's SON, also Alexander, who married ( Catherine Waters ) in 1912.
Catherine was born 1889 illegitimately to Catherine Waters b 1862, and the father was Marcus Nicolson b1865
This was Catherine's 2nd marriage of three.
First was to David Flett
Second to Alexander Manson
Third was to John Sutherland
