microsoft download error 646

How do I over come this error, I have tried downloading this a few times with the same result.

2. Is it the "automatic" Windows Updates that are failing to install??

If not, can you provide a wee bit more info about what you are doing (or trying to do).

Yes it is the "Automatic" Windows update for Vista many thanks in anticipation

This seems a common issue with VISTA and the most common suggestion to fix it is download and install EACH update manually. Not what you want to hear being an "owld mannie ":D

You might want to try this first.
You are going to
1. Turn OFF the User Account Control (UAC)
2. Run Windows Update again
3. Turn ON the User Account Control (UAC)

OK like this step by step.

1.
click on:
Start.
Control Panel.
User Accounts
User Accounts (in the new window)
Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off.
check the box to turn off UAC.
click "OK".
restart computer.

2.
click on:
Start.
All Programs
Windows update
Check for Updates
(and let it try to do what it has been failing to do)

3.
click on:
Start.
Control Panel.
User Accounts
User Accounts (in the new window)
Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off.
check the box to turn ON UAC.
click "OK".
restart computer.

See if that does the trick

That proves that Windows Update is "lacking" the correct permissions to run. There is probably a REGISTRY Fix that can cure that but best avoid going there methinks.

If ONLY you uses, or has access, to that computer then you could just leave User Account Control (UAC) turned off permanently.

However probabaly simpler letting sleeping dugs lie now its working again.:D
