I'm thinking of getting Skype and a webcam so can talk to family face to face but all the webcams I've seen on Amazon have separate cables for the mike so if your box is on the floor, as mine is, and the audio point round the back, it won't reach. No problem with the USB as I have an extension. Wouldn't have thought of this if I hadn't read several reviews complaining. What do people do or is there one that only needs USB ?

Simple. Buy an audio extension cable (http://www.amazon.co.uk/3-5mm-Stereo-Headphone-Extension-Cable/dp/B001D2QXJQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1273587863&sr=8-1).

Ho hum - now why didn't I think of that? I have a USB extension but didn't know I could get the other sort, I suppose because so many people reviewing on Amazon complained about this issue. Thanks Metal.

Before I get too carried away, the webcam I'm looking at has a built in microphone, it's not for headphones, and the company selling it didn't suggest an extension - but maybe that's because they're as dim as me. Just to be sure, does this make any difference?

Nope, makes no difference. As long as the microphone has a 3.5mm male audio connector it'll work fine.

Can you post a link to the webcam, just to make sure?

To be honest there are so many on Amazon it's hard to know, although I tend to take notice of reviews

I thought this looked the best

but having no experience of webcams I really don't know. Any guidance would be much appreciated bearing in mind I don't want to spend a lot. My daughter thought it would be nice to chat to her brother's kids up here - much easier if you can see who you're talking to :)

The second one looks fine, you might not even need an audio (mic) extension for it. And for that price, well, it's hardly taking a risk is it?

The one I used to use is similar, but the mic cable stretched far enough to reach the line-in socket on the back of the box on the floor. Just and no more, mind you.

This one might well be the same. And if not, an extension isn't prohibitively expensive.

Thanks Metal. I'll go for it. I'm pretty sure I'll need the extension but will try it first to see.
