I've had this laptop (Dell XPS with Vista) nearly 2 years and used to be able to play DVD's, but now whenever I insert one I get a message that the DVD is from the wrong region. This is rubbish because all my DVD's are Region 2 Eurpoe and I have played them before on this machine. Any ideas guys? I can't find any settings referring to default region.

Open the Control Panel (Start, Control Panel). Click on the System Maintenance link. Open Device Manager. (If you are in Classic View, you can select Device Manager directly from the Control Panel). Expand your DVD/CD-ROM drives by clicking in the arrow to the left.

Highlight your DVD drive with the left mouse/trackpad button, then right-click and select Properties. Click on the DVD Region tab. That should tell you what region it is currently set to (most drives allow changing the region 5 times, after which they become locked to the fifth region played.

You can run a free Region Free (http://www.tucows.com/preview/279162) package in the background which bypasses the region lock.

Oops me bad  - I remember getting a free one a few years ago for a customer and just did a quick search. I'm sure there'll be a similar fully free program somewhere on the Net!

:) Easy done. I think AnyDVD used to be free as well. I've not tried this http://www.dvd43.com/ but it claims to do the same thing.
