Terrific shot!

I wonder what they'll replace them with? If this current government carries on with MOD cutbacks the way they have been, we'll probably end up with old first world war spotter planes.

Lovely pics.
Get the photos of em now before they stop flying.:~(
I remember the Shacks flying over Wick when I was a bairn. What a lovely noise of 4 Griffons on song!
Well done!

They are to be retired at the end of this month, rumour has it there may be a 6 ship flypast, possibly at a few airports and not just Kinloss.

They are to be replaced by the Nimrod MRA4 but not until 2012, they are currently undergoing trials with BAe systems. However one is still abandoned on the runway at Prestwick after diverting in with nose gear problems.

You can relax in the knowledge that the "Spy" version, the R1 is now back in the air, noted flying around over Caithness recently in the wee small hours so keep yer tin foil hats on.

Thanks folks :)

Tuggs....Took this photo on Tues afternoon 23rd March from the road leading to Noss Head, and I assume that this was the last flight over Wick Airport for this and all the the other MK2 Nimrods. Over the years I've taken loads of Nimrod photos but this one is definitely my best effort. Saved the best for the last.

I'm pretty sure this was the last MR2 through Wick:(
Had the retirement ceremony today at Kinloss: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/north_east/8588658.stm

The're giving away some of the airframes apparently, might ask for one!

Maybe see the MRA4 late summer once it's at Kinloss for training.

Do they land at Wick? The wheels are down?

Phill
31-Mar-10, 15:34
No, they just do practice approaches for training purposes. The wheels never touch the runway.

What I wants to know is how do you get such cracking shots of moving aircraft....what's the secret?

What I wants to know is how do you get such cracking shots of moving aircraft....what's the secret?

Good lighting is key, make sure you have the sun behind you, especially if it's fast!
With the Nimrods shots above it's on final approach and into wind so comparatively slow.

Fast shutter speed and practice tracking the aircraft. Most digi cameras now will have a 'Sports' or similar setting which is what you need to use. Often they will take a burst of shots, maybe 3 or 4 at a time which ups the chances of one decent one.

Don't forget for every good image there will be about ten crap ones:

Thanks for the explanation, know just what you mean about 10 shots to get one decent one!
