Dotted Border is more of a winter species than a spring species as its flight period is from February to March, in some years appearing even earlier. Like many winter species the female is flightless and crawls onto a tree to attract males. In Caithness it has been recorded between 14th February and 3rd April. However, we know little about its status in the County as there are few records and the one in the picture is the first record since 1998. It is subdued in colour and takes its name from the prominent dots along the outer edges of the forewing and hindwing.
