Had a moment of madness and inadvertantly downloaded a trojan. It was the Vista Guardian 2010 virus.
anyway finally got rid of it but i have some little problems now if someone out there can please help?
1. my icon tray, some of the icons are missing.
2. if i try to open an application i.e. explorer, yahoo messenger, it comes up with the "open with" thingie and i have to search for the application on the C drive.
3. tried to download Spybot search and destroy but there was something corrupt with it and I looked at the remove programs to take it off and its not there? Can I just delete it from the C drive??

So far I think that is it!

Please help.:~(

Yeah seems to be a few doing the rounds, Yesterday I caught the one who tells you that you need to update your AV security and then the incessant pop-up's.
Avast wouldn't start, Malaware/spybot/orbit360 and Advanved system care were all suposedly corrupted. It even gave me problems trying to turn my pc off.
But I eventually got into safe mod and used all of the above and killed the swine.:)

pers
i'd dump anything else anti-virus/spyware and put this on:

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

for an MS product its VERY good and deals/cleans most nasties and seems to prevent them too.

quite impressed!

I downloaded Malwarebyte and lo and behold everthing seems ok after running it!!
Only thing I need to get rid of is Spybot which is not in the add/remove programmes, can I delete it straight from the C drive??

Just download and install it again, then uninstall it using the Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

I tried MS Advanced System Care the other day after reading the recommendations here, but was disappointed it didn't even recognise there was an infection after a scan. However my trusty Malwarebytes found and removed it no problem so I'll stick to the latter from now on.

I will be using the Malwarebyte also as it sorted the problem immediately!!
And I will have to watch what im opening, and I thought I was so careful??
Lesson learned.
Thanks everyone:D

It may be necessary to obtain and run rkill obtained from bleepingcomputer.com:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com
before it is possible to download and install Malawarebytes as many of these infections prevent communication with anti-virus providers, as decribed in the Conficker working group's test page:

http://www.confickerworkinggroup.org/infection_test/cfeyechart.html

If you do have access to another computer you can download from there, but I would copy across on a CD rather than a USB stick as these can pass on other infections such as Conficker.

Definitely be careful, but it is so easy to get stuff downloading before you can stop it. I searched for a youtube video recently, clicked the link, and was immediately aware of malaware downloading instead of a video.

Massive panic as I was at work (on my lunch break!!), and it's part of my job to tell people not to do things like that :confused
