Smile John Baikie & Isabella Robeson

Hi everyone

For those of you who have seen my other messages about James Baikie and his family, I have come across some more information about his parents.

No trouble with John Baikie, but James' mother and John's wife Isabella has turned into a bit of problem.

Initially I had her down as a Robertson, however the transcriptions of the OPR s at FreeGen consistantly has her as a Robeson. Her name also changes from Isobel to Isobella, I assume it is simply how the keeper of the OPR heard her name.

Has anyone else come across John Baikie and Isabel Robeson in their own research?

Here is the latest version of her family

Default Catherine Baikie

Hej Bill
Catherine was born Jan 14 1820 and christened Feb 20 1820,

Robeson, Robson, Robertson and even Robinson can all be interchangeable and would currently most likely be Robertson.

Hi Mamie and Rosemary

It just goes to show how incomplete web based research can be. Can you tell me the source for your 1820 date for catherine's birth.

I have just realised that if John Baikie and Isabella Robeson (Robertson) were married in 1816 even if I move Catherine to the 1820 date Mamie has suggested, it would mean that she was the only child who survived between 1816 and 1826 when Helen Baikie was born. I am a firm believer of the 2 year cycle of child birth so there must have been at least 2 or maybe three children who did not survive. The other possibility is that John was somewhere else/

I do not know who Isabella's parents were.

Default Catherine - source for birth

Catherine's birth is on the IGI.

Did you find the family on the 1841 census, I just have 51, 61 and 71.

Isabella died after civil registration so have you checked ScotlandsPeople for a death record?

There was another daughter Margaret born 1818, All of their children are on the IGI. All are extractions from the old parish registers.

I have a note that there was a son named George in 1822 - note the IGI has father as George Baikie and mother as Bell Robeson. So that would make 9 children between 1818 and 1834.

Don't think there are any others.

so we have
Margaret 1818
Catherine 1820
George 1822
Helen 1824
John 1826
Ann 1828
James 1830
Sinclair ( a girl) 1832
William 1834

Default 1841 Census

Hi Mamie

Found the entry for James and Isabella on FreeCen

Piece: SCT1841/36 Place: Dunnet -Caithness Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Dunnet Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 0 Page: 15
Address: Heathfield
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
BAIKIE John M 45 Farmer Caithness
BAIKIE Isabella F 40 Caithness
BAIKIE Helen F 15 Caithness
BAIKIE Anne F 12 Caithness
BAIKIE James M 10 Caithness
BAIKIE Sinclair F 7 Caithness
BAIKIE William M 5 Caithness

With the addition of Margaret and george and shifting Catherine to 1820 the two year pattern of births once again asserts itself.
