Default History of clearances in Caithness

Iam researching the history of the clearances in Caithness particularly the detail of daily life in all aspects before during and after these events
If anyone has information about this or can point me towards it that would be much appreciated

I have no information on this, however last week on the way back from Dunbeath I was thinking about the exact same question. I always notice the abandoned crofts along the A9 from Dunbeath to Thurso and was wondering what had happened to these people. One thing that came to mind was the herring fishing. After this industry died away many people around Caithness must have lost their livelihoods and possibly moved down to Glasgow or other cities for work.

I hope people give you information on this, the forum is not as popular as it was 5-6 years ago before the Scottish Independence vote - some were banned from the forum as it all got a bit heated. Hopefully some of the knowledge locals will still be on the forum and help out. The library in Thurso may have some books on this topic, or the heritage museum in Wick https://wickheritage.org/

    Thanks for the reply
I just started this research but I am already surprised by how much went on in and around Caithness and the hardships and poverty
I got some useful information from the Nuclear Archive and been reading some eye opening details of what people went through with evictions, emigration, poverty and abuse of some of the crofters and working people in this area
Most of the museums are closed for winter so will have to wait until they open to see what they have

Applications for Poor Relief are eye opening. Have a look at http://ambaile.org.uk
    Do search for poor relief.

Some of the stories are heartbreaking.

seen a guy do a 106 clearance in the Thurso legion a few years back, was quite impressive as the black was in a tricky spot, tight to the cushion.
