    Default RSPB Garden Birdwatch - 30th & 31st January 2010

RSPB Garden Birdwatch is just about upon us.

View the following link on how to take part and how to download and record the birds in your garden

    http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch/

Please join in as this information is of vital importance to establishing trends and what is still around in your local area. This will be especially important following the big freeze we have just had.

They reckon Blue Tits all but diappeared during the last big freeze so it will be great to hear that they have survived this time thanks to everyone putting out food and water for the little critters.

    Thanks, have fun
    Thanks
    Catherine

    Thanks for the link Catherine.

I must remember to take part this year as forgot last time.

Think I might do it some afternoon when there are a lot of birds in my garden as during previous Garden Birdwatche's hardly any birdies arrived!

Did an hour today and was surprised by the number of starlings

    1 x Redwing
    9 x Chaffinches
    2 x Blackbirds
    4 x Rooks
    10 x Jackdaws
    14 x House Sparrows
    60 x Starlings
    2 x Collared Doves
    1 x Robin
    1 x Song Thrush

The maximum number of Starlings of late has been 40 but awesome number this morning when I opened the curtains.

Yesterday was a first for a Redwing in my garden so was very surprised to see it back again today. Counted it as a Starling initially when I was doing my count and once I had my total I studied them individually and discovered one of the Starlings had a leg ring but couldn't read the number as too small and one of the gang was the Redwing. Great surprise bird in the flock.

Will do an hour again tomorrow and see if there is any difference.

Have fun and remember to report your findings.
    Thanks
    Catherine

I did an hour over lunchtime today - it was definitely quieter than usual though ...

    Jackdaw 4
    Herring Gull 2
    Starling 13
    Common Gull 5
    Chaffinch 13
    Rook 4
    Blackbird 2
    Song Thrush 1
    Greenfinch 10
    Goldfinch 2
    Siskins 2

Mind you, 13 is an all time record for chaffinches in our garden at one time!

    Exclamation A very different year

Well we had results like no other year. The garden has been taken over by Chaffinches and Blackbirds and not a single visit from a House Sparrow. However they were filling their faces in next doors garden. No Wren, No Goldfinch, No Dunnock, No Song Thrush, No Blue Tit and NO ROBIN!!!

    36 Chaffinches
34 Starlings (only because I put out home made fatballs)
16 Blackbirds (all scrapping like mad)
    10 Greenfinches
    2 Collared Doves
    2 Hodded Crows
and a visit from the neigbourhood villian Mrs Sparrowhawk. (She took off on sight of me with the camera)
    Away with the birds

I've had about 40 crows (they eat the horse poo in the field)
    2 sparrows
    4 robins
    12 collared doves
about 6 housemartins (resident to my barn)
I've seen the local sparrow hawk this morning
And I am currently looking at the barn owl that lives in one of our barns

    This afternoon we've had:

    Three robins
    Two blackbirds
    Three chaffinches
    One thrush
    One blue tit
and too many starlings, sparrows and greenfinches to count.

OH says we had a golden eagle as well, but that's a bare faced lie!
